Venom Aggressive Flanking Guide
Dive the enemy backline as Venom, disrupt supports, force cooldowns, and get out alive. The full flanking loop from positioning to escape, with ult combos and target priority.
Aggressively flank and dive the enemy backline as Venom to disrupt supports and key DPS, force out cooldowns and resources, create space for your team, and get out alive so you can re-engage quickly. Kills are a bonus. Surviving the engage while being a persistent threat is the priority. The loop: wall-climb into dive, tentacles immediately, pressure the right targets, shield at the right time, swing out, reset, repeat.
The Aggressive Flanking Loop
-
Position for the flank without burning your escape
Use Alien Biology (wall crawl and sprint) to climb nearby walls or high ground near the enemy backline. Stay out of sight, peek in third-person if needed, and confirm your team is positioned to capitalize. Do not swing in to engage in most cases. Save Venom Swing for the exit. Only swing-engage if you will stay in your supports' line of sight and the fight is already favorable.
-
Dive and immediately lock them down
Jump off and use Frenzied Arrival (dive) onto the backline, preferably landing so it pulls or knocks targets inward toward you. The moment you land, hit Cellular Corrosion (tentacles). The dive helps guarantee tentacle connections.
Target PriorityPrioritize low-mobility supports: Luna Snow, Mantis, Cloak and Dagger, Adam Warlock, Loki. Avoid hyper-mobile ones (Invisible Woman, Jeff, Rocket) as primary targets when possible.
-
Pressure while the tentacles work
Stick to the tethered targets. Hit Dark Predation (primary fire) consistently, headshots matter a lot for Venom's damage. Weave melees between primaries for higher DPS when in range (primary then melee then primary). The tentacles slow and then detonate for solid damage. Your job is to force resources: heals, escapes, defensive ults, peels from tanks and DPS. Forcing a tank or DPS to turn around is already big value.
-
Survive the pressure with Symbiotic Resilience
Watch your health. Do not engage without Symbiotic Resilience (overshield) reasonably available, ideally off cooldown or very close. Activate it when you are getting low, around 200 to 300 HP is a common window players recommend, or earlier if you are getting CCed or stunned a lot. Stay a few more seconds to force extra resources or secure a kill if possible, then leave.
-
Escape and reset fast
Use the saved Venom Swing to get out to your team or a health pack. If the swing gets interrupted, climb the nearest wall for height and dive back toward safety. Get healed, wait for key cooldowns (dive, tentacles, resilience), and re-engage as soon as possible, especially before the enemy's defensive cooldowns come back. While resetting, you can still poke frontline tanks with primaries for pressure and ult charge.
-
Ult usage for aggressive value
Venom's ult (Feast of the Abyss) has a low cost, pop it often. For one-shotting ~250 HP targets: dive then tentacles then two primary fires (no melee weave this time) then ult and bite while tentacles are still active. Some players time the tentacle detonation right after the ult lands. Use it to chunk healthy targets (including tanks for big self-shield) or finish softened ones. It also gives you massive bonus health.
ComboDive + Tentacles + 2 Primary Fires + Ult + Bite. All while tentacles are still active for maximum burst.
Target Priority
| Priority | Targets | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Dive first | Luna Snow, Mantis, Cloak and Dagger, Adam Warlock, Loki | Low mobility, high impact supports. Easy to lock down with tentacles. |
| Avoid initially | Invisible Woman, Jeff, Rocket | Hyper-mobile, will waste your cooldowns chasing. Only dive when isolated. |
| Opportunistic | Isolated or low-HP DPS, Moon Knight, Punisher | Free picks when out of position. Remove threats freelancing in your backline. |
Key Decision Points
-
Engage now or wait?
Only dive when you have an escape plan (swing available or wall route) and ideally some team presence or numbers advantage. Don't dive a full healthy 6-man alone. Use third-person peeks and camera flicks to check your team's readiness.
-
Chase the kill or leave?
If they're burning major resources and you're not about to die, stay a bit longer. If focused hard or your resilience is burned and swing is the only out, leave. Disruption over tunnel-vision kills.
-
Dive backline vs peel or frontline?
Be flexible. Counter-dive enemy flankers threatening your supports, contest objective, or draw aggro when needed. High mobility lets you swap roles mid-fight.
-
When to use ult?
Use it often since the cost is low. Pop it for burst damage on healthy targets, self-sustain in dangerous positions, or to finish off softened targets. Don't hold it for the perfect moment.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Swinging in to engage, leaving no escape, resulting in death and feeding ult charge
- Tunneling for kills instead of focusing on disruption and forcing resources
- Engaging without resilience available or standing in the open with no cover
- Diving too early before team is ready, or too deep out of heal range
- Ignoring health pack locations or failing to reset and re-engage quickly
- Holding ult too long instead of using it for tempo and self-sustain
