Mid Lane Control Mage Season 16

What This Guide Solves

Syndra is a lane bully with strong poke and pick potential, but she's vulnerable without her stun. Players struggle with landing Q-E stuns, managing passive splinter stacks, choosing the right build path, and positioning in teamfights. This guide covers the full gameplay loop from early lane to late game teamfights.

Early Game (Levels 1-6): Farm, Poke, Stack Passive

  1. Start Q and harass

Start Q (Dark Sphere). Use it on cooldown for last-hit harass when enemies go for CS. Place spheres predictably in their path. Follow with auto-attacks. Skill order: Q > E (level 2 for stun threat) > W. Max Q first.

  2. Build passive splinters fast

Goal: Reach 40 splinters quickly (damaging champs, leveling, cannon minions). This unlocks Q charges for more spheres and stuns. Shove waves with Q + autos when safe.

  3. Hold E for commitment

Do NOT waste E for minor poke. Hold it until the enemy commits (after their dash or in predictable spots). One good stun wins fights; missing one loses them.

  4. Summoner choices

Doran's Ring + pots. Take TP + Flash (standard) or Ignite in easy kill lanes.

💡
Why this matters Sets up safe scaling. Syndra is a lane bully with Q poke but vulnerable without stun. Getting 40 splinters by level 7-9 is your first major power spike.

Core Combos

Basic Trade / Stun
Q → E → W → Q + autos
Place a sphere with Q, then E through it for a stun. Grab a sphere or minion with W and throw it. Follow with more Qs and autos.
All-in (Level 6+)
Q × 2-3 → E stun → W throw → R
Set up 2-3 spheres with Q, E stun, W throw, then R (Unleashed Power) on the low target. Follow R with E for multi-stun potential in fights.
Advanced: Windwall Bypass
Cast E during Q animation
Cast E during Q animation to bypass windwalls if the enemy stacks on the Q sphere. Also use W on jungle camps or minions for vision, disruption, or repositioning.
💡
Sphere placement is everything Q creates the tools for stun and damage. Hold E until commitment. Use E defensively to peel divers when needed.

Build & Runes

Core Build
Luden's Echo → Sorcerer's Shoes → Shadowflame → Rabadon's Deathcap → Zhonya's or Void Staff
Alternative
Blackfire Torch → Cosmic Drive for %HP burn and haste. Or Mandate + Stormsurge for true damage vs. squishies.
Runes
Arcane Comet + Sorcery (Manaflow, Transcendence, Scorch) for poke/combat. Or First Strike + Inspiration for econ in safer lanes. Secondary: Legend: Haste.
Skill Max
Q → W → E (max Q first for poke and sphere generation)

Mid to Late Game Strategy

  1. Prioritize passive upgrades

40/60/80 splinter upgrades: Q charges, W true damage, wider E slow. Aggro early for 40+ by level 7-9.

  2. Wave control and picks

Freeze or slow-push with W minion grabs. Look for E stuns over walls or in river for jungle ganks and picks. Roam with TP advantage after shoving.

  3. Late game teamfights

Position backline, zone with spheres, fish for E stuns on carries. R as finisher (execute at 100 splinters). Use R spheres + E for AoE stun setups. Passive at 120 = bonus AP for massive scaling.

Key Decision Points

E Usage
Hold for stun or setup unless peeling. Wasting E = death sentence vs. divers. It has a 15s cooldown and you are exposed without it.
Build Pivot
Luden's rush for waveclear vs. Blackfire/Mandate for sustained fights. Vs. assassins (Zed etc.) get Zhonya's early. Vs. tanks get more pen and Blackfire.
Matchups
Strong blind pick with few terrible matchups. Hard vs. mobile divers: play back, use E for peel. Easy vs. immobile mages: aggro for stacks and kills.
