Core problem: Pick the MyCAREER path that gets you VC and Badge Tokens fastest without wasting hours in story bloat you cannot skip on a first save. Fire and Concrete locks you into an 11-chapter modern story. Eras drops you into a historical NBA immediately with a separate 40-level track. You cannot run both on the same MyPLAYER.

The Decision in One Table

What you care aboutFire and ConcreteEras
Time to NBA basketballHours of prelude, Rucker, G League, drillsImmediate historical NBA
Dedicated VC trackStory/quest payouts (~50k-59k if you grind the path)40K VC on the 40-level Eras Moments track, plus cosmetics
Badge grindingPossible, but games are scripted/teammate-dependentEasier to farm shots vs era defenses (e.g. 80s closeouts)
Skip optionAfter you finish it once, later careers can skipNo modern story to skip
Same-build dual pathNo, one save, one pathNo
One line: Need VC plus real NBA minutes now, choose Eras. Want story quests, Key Games, co-op Trace Miller, and the Fire and Concrete star track, choose Fire and Concrete, then accept you are stuck until you finish it once.

1If VC and Badges Are the Priority: Pick Eras

  • 1
Make the build first, then pick the path. Badge eligibility and token costs are tied to size/position/ratings, not to which story you pick. Do not start a career until attributes you actually use are planned.
  • 2
Start MyCAREER Eras. Choose one window: Magic vs Bird (1984), Jordan (1991), Kobe (2003), LeBron (2010), or Steph (2016).
  • 3
Play Eras Moments (historical objectives). That track is what players are pointing at for 40K VC plus extras.
  • 4
Treat early-era closeouts as free shooting reps. Players explicitly said they will leave 80s wings open from three for badge methods.
  • 5
Fill discipline meters with the actions your badges need. Set threes for Set and Fire, moving threes for Arc Cadence, contests for Wall Up. Tokens come from meters, drills, workouts, specialization, season/crew, not from watching cutscenes.

2If You Want Story and Co-op: Fire and Concrete

If you start Fire and Concrete you stay in it until you finish. Players who just wanted badges/VC call it torture. Lower the difficulty if a challenge is gated on AI scoring.

  • 1
Smash the Rucker / prelude games as fast as the objectives allow.
  • 2
Get to G League (also when co-op Trace unlocks, ~1-2 hours).
  • 3
Collect story/quest VC as you go. Offline-focused players mention 50k+ from career levels plus objectives.
  • 4
After year one, Key Games open. Dominate those for the MyCAREER star track.
  • 5
Know the cap: You only get 162 stars finishing the story. The 180-star Fire and Concrete reward requirement needs a Rebirth build. Do not expect to 100% that track on your first character.
Once any save has finished Fire and Concrete, later MyCAREER files can skip the story. Use that for a second build if you still want the modern path without the first-time lock.

3Do Not Use Either Story as Your Main Badge Farm

The fastest badge talk is not "which story." It is City modes on top of whatever career you picked:

  • 1
Street Kings: Better badge progression per game.
  • 2
Open Court Athletics: Better progression per minute.
  • 3
Combine both instead of only simulating MyCAREER quarters. That is independent of Fire and Concrete vs Eras.

4Spend VC in the Right Order

  • 1
Attributes that unlock the badges you will actually equip (20 slots, tokens per badge).
  • 2
Then token-hungry core badges to Gold/HOF.
  • 3
Cap Breakers after you can preview them in the Builder.
  • 4
    Cosmetics last.
VC is account-wide; badges/tokens follow the build. A second build still needs its own attribute spend. Passing-attribute prices in particular have been called extremely expensive this year; do not dump early VC into unused stats.
