Mortal Shell II Harden Seal: How It Works Now
Harden is no longer always on. It only exists while Vatra's Seal is equipped, and the Perfect Harden timing is what keeps you in the fight. Here is exactly how it works.
Core change from the first game: Harden is not a baseline mechanic anymore. It only exists while Vatra's Seal is equipped, which means you give up Guard and Parry entirely. Players who treat it like the first game's always-on Harden get wrecked: they Harden early, drain the bar, then eat the next hit. The skill is timing Perfect Hardens so the bar refills instantly and you never sit on cooldown.
1How Harden Works Now
-
1
Finish the Tar Golem in the prologue (Disciple's Grotto)
After the Harros cutscene, loot his corpse for Vatra's Seal. Equip it. That is the only way Harden exists.
-
2
Press and hold the defense button (LB / L1 / Alt)
You turn to stone instantly with no wind-up. You stay stone until something hits you or until you release.
-
3
One physical hit is negated, and the attacker usually staggers
Red-flash attacks and grabs go through stone. Never Harden into them.
-
4
A Harden bar under your health empties when you use it and refills slowly
You cannot Harden again until it is full. This is the cooldown that punishes early Hardens.
-
5
Press Harden just before the hit lands for a Perfect Harden
That deals Break (yellow bar), and the Harden bar refills instantly. Chain Perfect Hardens and you can keep going indefinitely. Miss the timing and you sit on cooldown.
-
6
Harden cancels your current attack animation
Swing greedy, stone mid-combo, then resume. This is why aggressive players commit to Vatra for a whole run.

4The Perfect Harden Combat Loop
- 1Equip Vatra's Seal before the encounter.
- 2Watch the enemy's wind-up, not your own swing.
Your eyes stay on the incoming attack.
- 3Harden at the last moment for a Perfect.
Confirm the bar snaps back to full.
- 4Riposte when the enemy's Break bar fills.
- 5If you miss and the bar is empty, dodge and space until it refills.
Do not tap Harden on an empty bar.
- 6Never Harden into a red flash.
Dodge red attacks and grabs. Stone does not stop them.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Equipping Vatra and expecting first-game Harden. It is not always available anymore. It is locked to one Seal and trades away Guard and Parry.
- Hardening early "just in case," dumping the bar, then getting hit on cooldown. The bar only refills instantly on a Perfect. Early Hardens leave you exposed.
- Trying to Harden red attacks. Red-flash attacks and grabs ignore stone. You must dodge them.
- Holding stone forever and forgetting the bar still has to recharge after a non-Perfect. The cooldown is real. Plan around it.
- Never swapping Seals. Harden is strong for first attempts and multi-hit chaos. It is not automatically best for every phase. Swap at a Beacon when the fight calls for parry or guard.
- Walking past Harros's corpse after the Tar Golem. That corpse has Vatra's Seal. Miss it and Harden is gone for the run until you backtrack.
