Surviving Phase 2 is the entire fight. Phase 1 (sword and shield) is readable if you parry and stay off the shielded side. Phase 2 (shield gone, multiple blades, long combo strings, leaping lunges, pin-cushion thrusts, whirlwinds, and fake-outs) is where most runs end. Double and triple hits often punish a single parry, dodges feel tight, and a few abilities can make him stop taking damage. Get him to half health without getting greedy, then stay alive through the multi-blade strings by dodging first and only taking 1-2 hits after a combo ends.

1Phase 1 - Shield Up

Do not use Sariel thorns in Phase 1. He becomes invincible. This is the most reported soft-lock for this fight.

2The Phase Transition at ~50%

What happens
He drops the shield
The fight shifts to multi-blade strings, leaping lunges, and whirlwinds. This is Phase 2.
Skip trick
Not reliable
The "skip Phase 2 by not riposting" trick is widely shared on guide sites, but players repeatedly report they still got Phase 2 anyway. Treat Phase 2 as required.
Patch note
Arena jank reduced
A patch fixed arena navigation, a stray Phase-2 lunge, and the phase-transition riposte clipping a wall. If you fought him on day-one patches, some of the jank is reduced now.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Reward on kill: Scholar's Wormstone (Clockwork Scythe Tarstone) plus a large Gloom drop. The Wormstone is the reason many people push this gate.
