PoE2 Tame Beast Guide

Core Goal

Players want a strong, permanent beast companion via the Tame Beast skill gem that provides powerful auras (especially Haste), damage buffs, or tankiness without dying in maps. The main friction points are finding the right rare modifiers, farming efficiently without wasting gems, and planning Spirit reservation around the companion.

How Tame Beast Works

Unlock the gem: Take a Level 9+ Uncut Skill Gem (not a Spirit Gem) to the Gemcutter. Cut it into Tame Beast. Requires 72 Dexterity.
Target only Rare Beast-type monsters. Hover over a monster to confirm it is Rare and Beast type before casting - the type appears below the health bar.
Capture process: Cast Tame Beast on the rare - it wraps it in wisps for about 9 seconds. Kill it during this window and the gem transforms into a named Companion gem (e.g. Companion: Quadrilla).
Equip and activate the Companion gem like an aura. It costs 34-42% Spirit to reserve.

If You Miss the Window

Kill before casting, or let the wisps expire - restart the instance (ESC > Respawn at Checkpoint). The rare does not respawn otherwise. Always keep a spare Tame Beast gem. Disenchant old companions at the vendor to recover one.

Farming Steps - Primary Spot

Act 3 Cruel - Jungle Ruins / Infested Barrens

Reach the Troubled Camp checkpoint in Act 3 Cruel.

Locate a Rare Quadrilla, Boar, or Antlion nearby.

Hover to read its modifiers before engaging. Do not attack.

Bad mods? ESC > Respawn at Checkpoint, run back, repeat. Stay close to the checkpoint to minimize reset time.

Good mods? Cast Tame Beast first, then kill within the wisp window.

The gem becomes your Companion. Equip it and toggle it on - it activates like an aura.

Alternative Farming Spots

Infested Barrens (Cruel): Best current spot for Haste Aura on Boar or Antlion. Quadrilla's Haste spawn rate has been reduced in recent patches.
Interlude zones (Khari Crossing): Guaranteed rares with strong forced modifiers. Respawn at checkpoint to reroll quickly.
Maps and Trials of Chaos: Keep Tame Beast equipped at all times. Rare beasts spawn with endgame modifier pools here.

Cruel difficulty gives beasts up to 4 modifiers vs 2 in Normal. Always farm Cruel or higher for quality companions.

Best Modifiers to Hunt

Quadrilla / Monkey

Best overall for damage and pack clearing. Top pick for general mapping.

Scourge Bird

Strong AoE carpet-bombing. Great for dense pack clearing in juiced maps.

Plague Harvester

Fast movement and good uptime. Works well with mobility-focused builds.

Haste vs Damage Mods

Haste Aura is the community consensus best pick for almost every build. Only prioritize damage auras if Haste is consistently unavailable or your Spirit pool cannot support the cost.

Spirit Planning

The companion costs 34-42% Spirit to reserve. Plan your passive tree and gear around this before farming. Running low Spirit means the companion gem slot is wasted.

Leveling the Companion

The companion gem levels with XP while equipped. Higher level means better stats and survivability. Some players put the companion gem on a second weapon set to avoid conflicting with main skill links.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

x Killing the rare before casting Tame Beast. Wastes the spawn and forces an instance reset.

x Casting on non-Beast or magic monsters. Tame Beast only works on Rare Beast-type monsters. Check the type before casting.

x Ignoring Spirit reservation. Equipping a companion without planning Spirit means it will not activate or will block other auras.

x Expecting non-aura mods to buff you. Most modifiers only affect the beast itself. Only mods that say "Aura" apply to the player and allies.

x Letting a low-level companion die in endgame. Farm beasts in higher-level zones or use Proximal Tangibility to protect it in maps.

x Running too far from the checkpoint during rerolls. Stay close to minimize run time per attempt - tight loops are much faster.
