Path of Exile 2 Patch 0.5 Tactician HCSSF Viable

Tactician Pinning Grenades Build Guide

Pin every enemy before they can attack. This build uses projectile grenades to apply Pin (immobilize), locking packs in place while you deal damage from safety. Rated by players as one of the comfiest HCSSF campaign experiences in patch 0.5 due to near-permanent crowd control.

Core Strategy

Pin enemies with grenade projectiles, then deal damage while they cannot move or attack. The Tactician's key passive nodes make all projectile damage apply Pin. Stack pin duration, pin chance, and damage vs. pinned targets (Sitting Duck, Lockdown, Pin Their Motivation) as your passive foundation. Defense: armor + deflection (Tactician nodes scale deflection from armor), Enfeeble curse, and Intimidate via Fearful Paralysis. In endgame, transition to Mortar Cannon totems that fire your grenades automatically.

Campaign Leveling Steps

1
Early Acts — Get Pin Online
Campaign start through mid-acts
  • Equip any grenade skill as soon as available; add supports for Projectile Count, AoE, flat damage
  • Pair with Rapid Shot to build Heat (boosts grenade damage) and apply Pin to packs
  • Passive nodes priority: Pin nodes first (all-projectile-damage-pins) then damage vs. pinned targets, then armor/deflection
  • Gear: life, resistances, projectile damage on any slot
  • Play loop: throw grenades from range, packs pin, move in and finish
  • Keep moving and repositioning — do not stand still in a pinned pack
2
Mid-Game — Mortar Cannon Setup
Mid-campaign to early maps
  • Unlock Mortar Cannon and link it with your main grenade (Explosive Grenade is standard)
  • Gem links priority: Projectile Count then AoE then Flat/Elemental Damage then Re-explode Chance then CDR supports (Cluster Bombs, Repeating Explosives)
  • Stack CDR heavily — enables frequent jumps, explosions, and totem uptime
  • Add a curse: Enfeeble or Temporal Chains
  • Add a movement skill for repositioning
  • Totems handle damage and pinning while you reposition safely

Endgame Optimization
Maps and beyond

Maximize: pin duration/chance, grenade re-explode, AoE, projectile multipliers.

Endgame play loop: Rapid Shot for Heat/pin setup, place Mortars, throw grenades, reposition with jump, detonate for bursts, repeat.

For bosses: build pin and Heat first, switch to focused single-target grenade links. Use jump movement to avoid telegraphs.

Gear Priorities (HCSSF)

Crossbow Flat phys/elemental/projectile bonuses or high phys/lightning base. This is always your top upgrade priority.
Armor High Armor/ES/Evasion hybrid pieces. Tactician scales deflection from armor — more armor means more deflection.
Jewels CDR, ES, grenade damage. CDR jewels are the biggest quality-of-life upgrade if skills feel clunky.
Boots Shankgonne for grenade-jump mobility (pair with CDR + Haste aura). Otherwise prioritize movement speed.
Flasks Instant life, movement, ailment removal, AoE/damage on use. Upgrade every 1-2 acts — outdated flasks kill runs.

Key Decision Points

Recommended
Mortar Cannon Totems

Set-and-forget. Place totems, they pin and deal damage autonomously while you reposition. Safer, easier for learning maps and bossing. Best for HCSSF.

Alternative
Direct Grenade Throwing

More active control and jumper-style mobility. Better if you prefer hands-on play. Requires more skill but gives more burst on demand for bosses.

Fire-to-Cold conversion — worth it?
Yes for dual immobilize. Many players convert fire-to-cold to get Pin plus Freeze simultaneously. This doubles the immobilize uptime and is especially strong in HCSSF where survival matters more than raw DPS.
Skills feel clunky or slow?
Invest in CDR immediately. CDR jewels and passive nodes are the direct fix for skill speed. Some passive nodes also ignore mana costs — prioritize those if mana is tight. If attack speed feels off, CDR solves it, not raw attack speed.
Boss damage feels weak?
Swap to concentrated single-target grenade links for boss fights. Do not use pure AoE links on bosses. The Mortar Cannon handles sustained DPS while you focus on dodging mechanics.

Common Mistakes

x
Under-investing in Pin nodes early
Without enough pin duration nodes, enemies break free and burst you. Spec into pin passive nodes before anything else in the tree.
x
Relying on Pin alone for defense
Pin has limits. Cap your resistances and build armor/deflection layers. Over-reliance on pin control without backup defenses gets you killed on hard mechanics.
x
Ignoring CDR when skills feel clunky
Poor CDR makes the build feel unresponsive, especially with low-movement-speed unique boots. Fix it with CDR jewels and Haste aura — don't push through without addressing it.
x
Using AoE links vs. bosses
Pure AoE grenade links deal poor single-target boss damage. Always swap to focused single-target links before a boss fight.
x
Entering juiced maps without checking uptime
In high-tier maps, verify pin uptime and flask charges before committing. A gap in pin coverage or empty flasks on a hard pack is a death sentence.
