Core Problem
The Ancient Beacons quest requires activating exactly 6 Vaal Beacons (Vaal triangles on the map) in Act 3. Many players get stuck after finding what seems like 6 - quest does not update, no Vaal Ruins portal appears (or it despawns), co-op progress fails to sync, or the temple console will not work. The quest unlocks the Vaal Temple mechanic for endgame temple runs.

Steps - Do These in Order

1

Progress Naturally Through Act 3 Zones

Do not teleport ahead. Progress through Jungle Ruins, Matlan Waterways, and related zones sequentially. Beacons are glowing Vaal structures with a pack of monsters around them - clear the pack to activate. A Vaal chest rises when done.

  • Check both surface and underground sections of each zone - several beacons are underground.
  • Explore every side path before moving on.
2

Use the World Map to Track Missing Beacons

  • Open the full world map and scan every Act 3 zone for unfinished Vaal triangle icons.
  • Hold Alt on individual waypoints to see a sublist of POIs - uncompleted beacons show up here. This is the most reliable method players use to find the one they missed.
Tip: Map icons do not always visually cross out when complete. Always use the Alt + waypoint sublist to confirm.
3

Handle the Tricky Beacon Locations

  • Matlan Waterways: Enter from the previous zone (Jungle Ruins or Azak Bog side) and walk through normally. Teleporting directly to the Matlan waypoint often skips or blocks beacon spawns due to instance/water canal layout. Reset the instance and re-enter from the start if beacons are missing.
  • Underground/crypt areas: Multiple beacons are hidden here. Do not skip any downward paths.
  • If a beacon location appears empty, reset the instance (log out or zone out and back in) - it sometimes fails to spawn on the first load.
4

Enter the Portal Immediately on the 6th Beacon

When you activate the 6th beacon, a portal to Vaal Ruins opens at or near that location. Do not leave or progress further before entering.

  • Enter with your full party right away.
  • Inside: clear the area, talk to Doryani or Alva if they appear, and interact with the temple console to begin building and running temples.
Do not continue to Act 4 before entering. Leaving the zone can despawn the portal with no easy fix until later Interludes.
5

Fix a Stuck or Despawned Portal

  • Check the right side of your map screen (near the hideout/Chaos Temple icons) - Vaal Ruins waypoint often unlocks there for direct re-entry.
  • Continue to Interludes (e.g., Ashen Forest in later acts). Additional beacons and Vaal Ruins spawns appear in Interlude zones specifically to fix soft-locks. Players consistently report this resolves missing portal and console issues.
  • Co-op: Party leader must own and load the instance first - progress only counts for the leader in most cases. Have all players re-enter together after the leader loads.
6

Farm More Crystals for Further Temple Runs

After the first temple run you need additional crystals to fuel more console uses. These come from extra beacons found in Interlude zones and endgame maps. If only 1-5 slots light up on the console, farm more Interlude beacons to fill them.

Key Decision Points

Co-op vs Solo

Co-op has consistent sync issues with this quest. Designate one player as leader and have them load every instance. If the quest is stuck for a non-leader, that player may need to solo re-run the beacons in their own instance.

When to Enter the Portal

Enter immediately after the 6th activation. Do not go back to town, do not progress to the next zone. The portal is tied to that instance and despawns if you leave before entering.

Instance Resets

Reset instances freely while hunting beacons - they respawn on reload. But once a portal opens, enter it before resetting anything or the portal is gone.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

x Skipping underground sections. Multiple beacons are underground. Never skip downward paths or crypts.
x Teleporting directly to Matlan Waterways waypoint. Enter zones sequentially from the previous area - direct teleport breaks beacon spawns in this zone.
x Leaving after the 6th activation without entering the portal. The portal despawns if you zone out or progress before entering.
x Trusting map icons alone. Icons do not always update visually. Use Alt + waypoint sublist to verify which beacons are actually complete.
x Ignoring Interludes. If you are stuck after Act 3, Interlude zones (Ashen Forest etc.) have additional beacons and Vaal Ruins spawns designed to fix soft-locks.
x Non-leader assuming shared progress in co-op. Quest progress is tied to the instance owner. Non-leaders must run beacons in their own instance if desynced.
