Path of Exile 2
Patch 0.5 League Meta Shifts
What changed, what got buffed, what got nerfed, and how to adapt your progression from campaign through endgame in PoE2 Return of the Ancients.
Patch 0.5 - Return of the Ancients
Campaign to Endgame
Core Problem
PoE2 0.5 brought significant meta changes: minion buffs, ES recharge nerfs, reworked Atlas mechanics, and skill buffs to Whirling Assault, Earthquake, and Tempest Bell. Players running pre-0.5 builds are hitting walls, and new players need to know which starters actually perform Day 1-4+ versus which ones are traps.
What Changed in Patch 0.5
New systems: Reworked Atlas mechanics (breach/abyss adjustments), longer endgame progression path, new crafting options including resistance swaps.
1Best 0.5 Starters
Spirit Walker
Top Tier
Companions/Twister. Smoothest campaign, cheap gear, companion army for boss damage. Dominant early-to-mid ladder.
Martial Artist
Top Tier
Whirling Assault + Tempest Bell. Direct skill buffs, balanced clear and bossing, higher APM playstyle.
Ice Shot Deadeye/Amazon
Strong
Fastest raw mapping speed. Best choice if clear speed is the priority over bossing consistency.
Avoid: Heavy ES recharge builds. The nerfs make glass-cannon ES significantly less reliable. Prioritize life/armor across all builds in 0.5.
2Campaign to Maps Transition
- Level with your core skill from Act 1 - do not swap around mid-campaign
- Prioritize weapon upgrades and resistances before any offense investment
- Farm campaign bosses for currency, focus movement and clear speed
- Hit maps and set up Atlas nodes for your preferred mechanics (breach/abyss adjusted in 0.5)
- Use new resistance swap crafting immediately to stabilize defenses
3Mid-Game Scaling
Spirit Walker
- Stack companion damage + speed
- Add Twister for clear
- Monkey tech for bossing
- Farm "extra crits" on pillars/monkeys
Martial Artist
- Whirling Assault + bells for clear/bossing
- Stack weapon range bonuses
- Tempest Bell viable as main damage
- Test Earthquake for AoE if needed
Pivot point: If clear feels slow after hitting maps, consider switching to Ice Shot Deadeye/Amazon for ranged mapping speed.
4Endgame Push
- Optimize Atlas tree for new 0.5 mechanics and bosses
- Minion/plant builds (Djinn Disciple, Oracle plants) for low-effort bossing
- Farm divines via strong clear mechanics - Ice Shot or Spirit Walker for speed
- Track ladder daily in the first week - meta shifts fast and new dominant builds emerge
Key Decision Points
Speed vs Tankiness - which matters more?
Ice Shot/Deadeye for fastest mapping; Spirit Walker/Martial Artist for better boss survivability. Choose based on whether you prioritize atlas completion speed or boss kill consistency.
Minions vs Self-Cast
Minion/companion builds are easier with the 0.5 buffs but can feel passive long-term. Whirling Assault and Twister give more control at higher APM. Choose based on your preferred playstyle intensity.
SSF vs Trade - does it change the meta pick?
SSF favors Spirit Walker/monkey for self-found gear scaling. Trade opens more exotic transitions into plants or totems once base gear is sorted.
When should I reroll?
If stuck on Act bosses or early maps feel bad after 4-6 hours, switch to Twister Spirit Walker. It is the most consistent performer across skill levels in 0.5.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Avoid These
- Running heavy ES recharge builds that were nerfed in 0.5 - they underperform significantly now
- Ignoring the new Atlas pathing and wasting time on dead mechanics
- Sticking to pre-0.5 playstyles without adapting to buffed skills
- Chasing off-meta builds without testing them in actual maps first
- Neglecting weapon upgrades and resistances early - offensive stats without defenses gets you killed
