How to Fish: Second Boss Tips
Beat the Giant Piranha on Island 2 without getting shredded by the swarm. Get the Modified Leech bait, pick the right weapon, manage adds, and keep the skeleton for Island 3 progression.
Goal: Kill the Giant Piranha (the second story boss on Island 2) before the white escape timer runs out. The kill alone is not enough. You need the Giant Piranha Skeleton (quest trophy) handed to the woman by the lake for Island 3 coordinates. Selling or cooking that drop resets your progression.
1Prep Before You Spend the Bait
- 1Collect 3 leeches from the ground
They are pickups near paths and plants around the lake on Island 2, not fish you catch.
- 2Give all 3 leeches to the woman by the lake.
She returns the Modified Leech bait.
- 1Buy a gun before casting.
Players consistently treat the shotgun as the comfortable solo pick because it clears the swarm in 1-2 shots.
- 2Pistol works if you aim for the boss head
Only thin adds when they are directly on you.
- 1Eat to full HP.
- 2Leave one inventory slot empty.
Dead small piranhas are mid-fight food. You need room to pick them up.
- 3Cast from the shore, not deep water.
If you go down in the water you drop your gun in grass or waves and burn the timer hunting it.
2Fight Loop
- 1Cast Modified Leech. Boss and swarm spawn together.
- 2Keep moving. When the Giant Piranha lunges, strafe sideways.
Do not backpedal in a straight line. Its charge carries past you and that is your damage window.
- 3Priority: damage the big fish whenever you have a clean shot.
Only shoot small piranhas that are blocking movement or chewing you.
- 4When a small piranha dies, eat it immediately to recover HP.
That is the main solo sustain trick players repeat.
- 5Watch the thin white bar under the boss HP.
If it empties, the boss leaves and the bait is gone. Do not farm every add.
3After the Kill
- 1Sweep drops fast.
Seagulls steal loose fish.
- 2Keep the skeleton, not the meat chunks.
- 3Hand the skeleton to the lake NPC.
She gives you Island 3 coordinates.
Key Decision Points
- Solo vs multiplayer. Boss HP scales with player count. In co-op, one person drives the boat in a wide circle off the island (piranha cannot catch the boat) while others shoot. Aim pistol at the head. Shotgun is worse in co-op because the only target that matters is the big one.
- Shotgun vs pistol (solo). Shotgun if the swarm keeps collapsing on you. Pistol if you can stay mobile and keep headshots on the boss.
- Adds vs boss priority. The white escape timer is the real enemy. Spending the fight clearing every minion while the white bar dies is the most common failure pattern.
Common Mistakes
- Spending the fight clearing every minion while the white bar dies. The boss leaves and the bait is gone.
- Running straight backward into the charge. Strafe sideways instead so the boss overshoots.
- Casting with no gun, empty stomach, or full inventory. All three are solo-fight killers.
- Selling the skeleton. It is the quest hand-in item, not vendor trash.
- Fighting in the water and losing the gun on death. Cast from shore.
- Treating this like the Spider Crab. No reliable self-stun here. The swarm plus timer are the real fight.
