How to Fish Mutated Bowhead Whale Summon Method
Complete guide to summoning the Mutated Bowhead Whale (Magma Whale) on Volcano Island. Covers getting the Fish Bucket, catching the whale, the crater throw, and surviving the fight.
You have a dead Bowhead Whale and need to turn it into the Mutated Bowhead Whale by throwing the carcass into the summit crater lava on Volcano Island. The number one failure point is losing the body or throwing it into the wrong lava.
Step-by-Step Summon Guide
Get the Fish Bucket
On Volcano Island (Island 5), talk to the scientist in the yellow hazmat suit. Catch five volcano-native fish using a Scientific Lure and hand them in. He gives you the Fish Bucket.
If you already have a Fish Bucket from a previous session, skip this step.
Catch and kill the normal Bowhead Whale
Equip the Fish Bucket as bait and cast from Volcano Island. Fight and kill the Bowhead Whale.
Carry the body to the summit crater
Pick up the whale carcass and climb Volcano Island using the wooden planks. Only the crater at the very top works for the summon. Slope lava streams on the way up will not accept the body.
Throw the whale in, then run immediately
Equip the carcass and throw it into the crater lava. The Mutated Bowhead Whale erupts right where you are standing.
Stay in the volcano area and fight
Move, shoot (an upgraded Assault Rifle is what players use), heal the instant you take a hit, and watch for persistent magma pools plus the landing slam.

Spare Fish Buckets
If you wipe or the mutated form despawns, you need another normal whale. Buy extra Fish Buckets before your first throw so you do not have to redo the scientist quest.
Fight at the volcano vs kite to Island 4
You can stay and fight around the crater, or slowly boat toward Island 4's casino and wedge the whale in the door pillars so it cannot hit you. Boating too fast triggers a despawn. Choose based on your weapon upgrade level.
Last hit for the punch achievement
Only the final blow counts if you want the bare-hands kill achievement. Damage the whale down with your rifle first, then switch to fists for the last hit.
Common Mistakes
- Selling or cooking the first Bowhead Whale before reaching the crater.
- Throwing the carcass into slope lava instead of the summit crater.
- Standing on the crater edge after the throw and getting insta-slammed.
- Speeding away by boat and despawning the Mutated Bowhead Whale.
- Going into the fight without a maxed or upgraded Assault Rifle and a full stack of food and heals.
