How to Fish Boss Bait: Spider Crab, Giant Piranha, Mutated Bowhead Whale
Turn cheap shop items and ground pickups into the one bait that summons each boss, then keep the body when the next boss needs it. Exact items, NPC hand-ins, and the volcano carcass throw.
Goal: The objective is not "catch a rare fish." It is turning a cheap shop item or ground pickup into the one bait that actually summons that boss, then keeping the body when the next boss needs it. Players keep burning the wrong item and having to re-farm the whole chain.
1Spider Crab - Empty Beer Can (Lighthouse)
What people mess up: they drink the beer.
- 1Farm early crabs and clams until you can buy the Beer Can ($12) from the Lighthouse shop.
Do not open or drink it.
- 2Give the full can to the Lighthouse Keeper.
He drinks it and hands back the Empty Beer Can.
- 3Equip the empty can on the Crab Fishing Rod and cast near the lighthouse shore.
That is the summon.
2Giant Piranha - Modified Leech (Forest / Island 2)
What people mess up: they try to fish for leeches.
- 1Walk the Forest island and pick up three Leeches off the ground.
Tiny pickups around the lake area. You do not catch them on a rod.
- 2Give all three to the woman by the lake.
She returns the Modified Leech.
- 3Equip that lure and cast at the lake.
That summons the Giant Piranha plus small piranhas.
3Mutated Bowhead Whale - Bowhead Carcass (Volcano)
This is two bosses. The first whale is the bait for the second.
- 1Talk to the scientist in the yellow suit on Volcano Island.
Catch five volcano-native fish (Scientific Lure plus ground Foot Snails count) and hand them in. He gives the Fish Bucket.
- 2Equip the Fish Bucket and cast to summon the normal Bowhead Whale.
Kill it.
- 3Do not sell, grill, or drop the body permanently.
Pick the carcass up, carry it up the wooden path to the crater at the top. Side lava streams do not count.
- 4Throw the carcass into the summit crater.
That throw summons the Mutated Bowhead Whale.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Drinking the beer instead of feeding it to the keeper. The empty can is the bait, not the full one.
- Selling or cooking the Bowhead after phase 1. The carcass is the bait for the mutated form.
- Looking for leeches in the water instead of on the dirt. They are ground pickups around the lake.
- Casting the special bait before weapons, ammo, and food are ready. The bait is consumed on the attempt.
- Throwing the whale into a side lava flow instead of the summit crater. Only the top crater works.
- Standing still after the mutated whale erupts. Run downhill immediately after tossing the carcass.
