Core problem: Early Access and Deluxe launch of Halloween The Game is playable but unstable. Players are losing story progress to crashes and disconnects, Challenge 6s often refuse to complete even when done correctly, NPCs ignore commands or get stuck, Michael can go invisible, and interactions like doors, items, grabs, and QTEs fail mid-match. Hotfix 1 on September 5 fixed some crashes, some challenge tracking, offline queue, Michael's get-up prompt, and Xbox Series S Performance Mode rendering. A bigger Day One patch is slated for September 8. Treat everything below as workarounds until that lands.

Hotfix 1 Status (September 5)

Fixed in Hotfix 1Still broken
Some story crashes. Some challenge tracking. Offline queue incorrectly tied to login. Michael get-up prompt missing. Xbox Series S Performance Mode rendering bug. Challenge 6 inconsistency for Prologue, Chapter 2, Chapter 4. NPC AI: freeze, lock inside, ignore follow. Invisible Michael after shift while downed. Item, door, and QTE softlocks. Story disconnects still wipe progress. Voice chat and crossplay friend joins failing.
Day One patch is the next real fix window: September 8. Until then, short story sessions plus the exact Chapter 4 sequence are the only steps players report actually changing outcomes.

1Do This Before Another Long Story Run

2Challenge 6s That Will Not Complete

If the full Chapter 4 sequence still does not unlock after 2-3 clean 12-14 minute runs, stop grinding it. Community consensus is the tracker is broken for a subset of accounts.

3Multiplayer Bugs and Workarounds

NPCs freeze or ignore commands
Spam shove or push to physically move a stuck NPC toward a basement or door. If they lock inside after you told them to follow, exit through a window and talk again. Do not trust them to use an escape route on their own.
Invisible Michael
Reported after he shifts while being downed. You cannot reliably counter it. If the lobby is already ruined, leave rather than play a full match against an invisible Shape.
Downed as Michael, no get-up prompt
Hotfix targeted this. If the prompt still does not appear, mash the usual get-up input anyway. Some players said the UI was missing but the action still worked after the patch.
Come back as Loomis or cop after death
Not guaranteed. After you die and do spectator minigames, you need to draw the specific perk card. Chance is very low. A trophy can fire while you stay in spectate. Do not plan a match around respawning.
Items, doors, QTEs do not register
Drop the item and have a teammate pick it up, or walk away and re-approach. If a QTE animation locks you, you are usually dead. That is a known softlock, not something you can mash out of.
Voice chat and crossplay friend joins fail
Retry in a few hours or play same-platform party if the party never forms. Launch server load is the likely cause.

Common Mistakes

Bottom line: Hotfix 1 already shipped crash, tracking, offline-queue, Michael get-up, and Series S display fixes. Community still hits Challenge 6 inconsistency, NPC AI, invisible Myers, interaction and QTE softlocks, and story disconnects. Day One patch is the next real fix window on September 8. Until then, short story sessions plus the exact Chapter 4 sequence are the only steps players report actually changing outcomes.
