Halloween The Game Launch Bugs and Workarounds
Halloween The Game Deluxe early access is playable but unstable. Hotfix 1 shipped September 5 for crashes, challenge tracking, offline queue, Michael get-up, and Series S display. Day One patch is slated for September 8. Here is what is still broken and the workarounds players are confirming.
Core problem: Early Access and Deluxe launch of Halloween The Game is playable but unstable. Players are losing story progress to crashes and disconnects, Challenge 6s often refuse to complete even when done correctly, NPCs ignore commands or get stuck, Michael can go invisible, and interactions like doors, items, grabs, and QTEs fail mid-match. Hotfix 1 on September 5 fixed some crashes, some challenge tracking, offline queue, Michael's get-up prompt, and Xbox Series S Performance Mode rendering. A bigger Day One patch is slated for September 8. Treat everything below as workarounds until that lands.
Hotfix 1 Status (September 5)
| Fixed in Hotfix 1 | Still broken |
|---|---|
| Some story crashes. Some challenge tracking. Offline queue incorrectly tied to login. Michael get-up prompt missing. Xbox Series S Performance Mode rendering bug. | Challenge 6 inconsistency for Prologue, Chapter 2, Chapter 4. NPC AI: freeze, lock inside, ignore follow. Invisible Michael after shift while downed. Item, door, and QTE softlocks. Story disconnects still wipe progress. Voice chat and crossplay friend joins failing. |
1Do This Before Another Long Story Run
-
1
Install Hotfix 1 if you have not. Confirm the game is fully updated on Steam or console.
-
2
Play story in short sessions.
Players report hard crashes and server disconnects in story that wipe unsaved progress. Finish a chapter or challenge, quit to menu, then continue. Do not assume auto-save is safe.
-
3
PC: drop settings now.
Community reports ray tracing and high presets tanking even strong cards. Lower shadows, RT, and resolution first if you crash or hitch.
-
4
Xbox Series S: if the image looks wrong in Performance Mode, switch modes once after the hotfix.
That specific display bug was called out as fixed.
-
5
Offline: if offline still waits on a queue, restart the client.
Hotfix claims the offline-queue tie is fixed.
2Challenge 6s That Will Not Complete
-
P
Prologue Challenge 6: hit each orderly at least once so the game registers an interaction.
Do not only scare them off. Clearing the map and leaving is not enough. Players who let them run never got credit. If it still fails after a clean wipe, it is the same RNG-tracking bug, retry later or wait for the patch.
-
C2
Chapter 2 Challenge 6: get the surprise prompt on all three targets.
Some players still do not get completion even with two surprise pops each. If one clean run does not pop the reward, it is not always user error. Move on and come back after September 8.
-
C4
Chapter 4 Challenge 6: use the exact community route, not just "movie accurate."
Dog: hug or grab, do not stab-spam. Lock Annie in the shed, then car kill. Close Lynda's bedroom door when you leave. Stalk Bob first, then Lynda. Pin Bob from the closet opposite the pin wall, wait until his walk-away animation starts, then grab. Do not pop out of the closet first, that alerts Lynda. Sheet on requires Bob's glasses. Ghost or phone kill on Lynda. Stalk Laurie in the living-room closet to 3, then heavy attack, R2 not R1 on PlayStation, after she sees the bodies. Chase to the other house and grab so she stabs you. Avoid restarting mid-run and avoid skipping cutscenes.
3Multiplayer Bugs and Workarounds
Common Mistakes
- Treating Challenge 6 as "movie accurate equals complete." The game often wants a specific grab, door, or heavy-attack sequence, not the film beat.
- Stabbing the dog instead of hugging or grabbing. Square on PlayStation, not the attack button.
- Popping out of the closet before pinning Bob. Alerts Lynda and breaks tracking. Walk up from behind instead.
- Leaving Lynda's door open. She comes downstairs and the pin fails.
- Assuming a trophy or surprise prompt means the challenge saved. Many players have the prompt and still get no credit.
- Assuming death to Loomis is a mechanic you can rely on. It is a low-chance perk card draw, not a guaranteed respawn.
- Playing on high or RT settings through launch instability. Drop settings first.
- Doing a 40-minute story sit without backing out after each challenge. Crashes wipe unsaved progress. Quit to menu after each completion.
