Your damage feels way too low compared to what build guides showcase, even when you copy a popular Season 14 build. The reason: you are stacking the wrong kinds of damage or over-investing in already-huge additive pools instead of balancing and maximizing separate multiplicative buckets. This guide breaks down exactly how damage is calculated and what to prioritize.

Step 1: Turn On Advanced Tooltips

Go to Options then Gameplay then Advanced Tooltip Information. Every affix now shows [+] (additive, goes into one shared pool) or [x] (multiplicative, its own bucket). This is the single most-mentioned first step in community discussions. Without it you are guessing.

Step 2: Understand the Damage Buckets

Final damage is the product of independent buckets. Stats inside the same bucket add first. Different buckets multiply.

Key Rule

Once your additive pool is past ~500%, a new applicable [x]% is almost always better than more [+]. A true [x]10% is a flat +10% total damage. The same [+]10% into a 1500% pool is only ~0.6% actual gain.

Step 3: Priority Order for Higher Damage

  1. Guarantee Crit and Vulnerable uptime

    Get Crit Chance high (target 80%+ where possible). Ensure near-constant Vulnerable via skill, temper, Aspect, glyph, or seasonal mechanics. The baseline x1.5 Crit and x1.2 Vulnerable are free multiplicative damage. Missing them is one of the biggest causes of low damage even when copying a build.

  2. Stack the scarce multiplicative buckets first

    • Vulnerable [x]% is highest priority because it has fewer slots (mainly gloves, amulet, rings, not weapons). Fill those slots with Vulnerable Damage Multiplier when you have good uptime.

  3. Masterwork and Greater Affix the multipliers

    Push Masterworking crits onto your best [x]% affixes (Crit multi, Vuln multi, key Aspect values). Greater Affixes on those same stats give bigger jumps than more additive.

  4. Balance the buckets instead of dumping into one

    Evening out Crit multi vs Vuln multi (accounting for uptime) usually beats overloading one. A more balanced product of the multipliers yields higher total than extreme imbalance.

  5. Fill remaining slots with high-uptime additive only after the above

    More [+] All Damage, Close, etc. still helps early-to-mid game, but becomes very weak late. Prefer conditional additives only if uptime is near 100%.

  6. Optimize Paragon, tempers, and gems

    Prioritize Paragon boards and glyphs that give [x]% or feed under-represented buckets. Temper for multipliers or high-uptime additives that match your build. Gems often contribute to the elemental or All Damage bucket, so factor that in when deciding gear affixes.
