Season 14
Barbarian Class
All Builds
What is Weapon Expertise?
Barbarian's unique class mechanic. Each weapon type (1H Axe, 1H Sword, 2H Axe, 2H Sword, 2H Mace, Polearm) has a rank from 0 to 10. Your active Technique applies its bonus to all skills, regardless of which weapon is equipped. Getting the right technique to rank 10 is essential for build damage multipliers and synergies.
Weapon Expertise Bonuses
2H Axe
Vulnerable Damage
Flat Vulnerable damage bonus. Works with nearly every build. The most commonly recommended Technique for general-purpose Barbarian builds.
2H Sword
Bleed / Overpower
Bleed synergy and Overpower damage. Best for Rend and bleed-focused builds. Pairs with skills that apply or scale from bleeding effects.
2H Mace
Stun / Crowd Control
Crowd control and stun bonus. Niche use for CC-heavy setups. Often the default starting technique, which is not ideal for most builds.
1H Axe
Vulnerable Damage
Vulnerable damage for dual-wield setups. Alternative to 2H Axe when using two 1H weapons.
1H Sword
Bleed / Attack Speed
Bleed and attack speed bonus for dual-wield builds. Good for Frenzy and fast-hitting playstyles.
Polearm
Critical / Crowd Control
Critical hit and crowd control bonus. Used by specific builds that rely on polearm weapon assignments. Check your build guide for requirements.
How to Unlock and Change Weapon Technique
-
1Open the Weapon Expertise panel Access via the Skill Tree (default S on PC) or the Weapon Technique window (Shift+C on PC). The panel shows all weapon types and their current ranks.
-
2Check if your desired technique is available You can only select a weapon type that has at least rank 1. If everything is at rank 0 except one type, you are locked until you level others. Equip the desired weapon type and gain at least 1 rank to unlock it.
-
3Select your Technique Click the weapon type you want as your active Technique. The bonus applies to all skills automatically, regardless of equipped weapons. Most players pick 2H Axe for Vulnerable damage (works with nearly every build) or 2H Sword for bleed synergies.
How to Level Weapon Expertise to Rank 10 Fast
Use the Kyovashad Training Grounds
The Training Grounds (next to the World Tier statue in Kyovashad) has training dummies that grant expertise XP reliably without combat risk. This is the fastest method by far.
-
1Drop to Normal difficulty Switch to Normal or T1 for fastest gains. Higher difficulties do not increase expertise XP rate and only slow you down.
-
2Equip the target weapon type Equip one weapon of the type you want to level. If dual-wielding, use two matching types. Remove other weapon types to force usage. Buy from a vendor or gambler if you do not have one.
-
3Reassign a skill to use that weapon type On PC: hover a skill in the Skill Tree, press Middle Mouse Button to cycle weapon assignment. On console: open skill assignment with L3, cycle with the assign button. Good skills for leveling: Whirlwind (hits multiple dummies), Frenzy (1H), Flay or Upheaval (2H), or basic attacks.
-
4Spam attacks on training dummies Attack the dummies in the Training Grounds. Rank 10 is often reached in seconds to minutes with good gear. Whirlwind plus multiple dummies is the fastest method for leveling multiple weapon types.
-
5Repeat for each weapon type you need Keep one of each weapon type in your inventory for quick swaps. Re-equip, reassign skills, and spam dummies again. The entire process takes under 15 minutes for all types.
-
6Switch back to your real build After maxing the relevant expertise, re-equip your actual gear and reassign skills to your build setup. Select the correct Technique in the Expertise panel.
Key Decision Points
-
Which Technique for your build: Follow your build guide. 2H Axe for Vulnerable damage (general purpose), 2H Sword for bleed builds (Rend), Polearm for specific builds that require it. Do not assume equipped weapons determine your Technique bonus.
-
Technique vs equipped weapons: The selected Technique applies its bonus to all skills. Equipped weapons can contribute if they match, but the Technique slot is the main source. Avoid duplicate bonuses for no extra benefit.
-
When to level expertise: Early after getting decent weapons, before pushing high tiers. Maxing takes under 15 minutes total. Do it as soon as you have your weapon types available.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Not reassigning skills to the target weapon. If your skills are assigned to a different weapon type, you will level the wrong expertise. Always check the weapon assignment in the Skill Tree before training.
- Staying on high difficulty while training. Higher difficulties do not increase expertise XP. Drop to Normal for the fastest gains.
- Ignoring the Technique slot. Even with maxed expertise ranks, if you do not select the correct Technique, the bonus does not apply to your skills.
- Assuming equipped weapons auto-set expertise. Your first expertise rank often comes from your main attack weapon, but the Technique slot is separate. Check and set it manually.
- Farming real enemies instead of Training Grounds. Real enemy farming is slower and riskier. Training dummies grant reliable XP with zero risk.
- Missing the hidden weapon assignment button. On PC, the weapon assignment toggle is Middle Mouse Button in the Skill Tree. Many players miss this and wonder why their expertise is not leveling.
