Core Problem

The Hive runes that start this entire questline are completely invisible without a Weapon of Sorrow equipped. Most players run Scarlet Keep multiple times without knowing the entry exists. Get a qualifying weapon first, then follow this guide from start to finish.

Cull's Shadow (Exotic) Exotic Catalysts Ghost Shell Sparrow + Ship Emblem + Shader

1Get a Weapon of Sorrow First

Any of these four weapons qualifies. Pick whichever you have access to - they all work identically for rune visibility and shooting.

Easiest
Thorn
Buy from Monument to Lost Lights kiosk in the Tower. Requires Forsaken ownership.
Craftable
Osteo Striga
Craft via the Witch Queen campaign pattern system. No raid required.
Raid
Touch of Malice
Farm King's Fall raid. Free to access. Drop from final encounter.
Raid
Necrochasm
Farm Crota's End raid. Free to access. Rare drop from Crota.
Does NOT count: Malfeasance and Whisper of the Worm are not Weapons of Sorrow and will not reveal the runes.

2Unlock the Quest in Scarlet Keep

  1. Launch the Scarlet Keep strike from the Moon director
  2. Play normally through to the final boss Hashladûn and kill her
  3. With your Weapon of Sorrow equipped, look for 3 green Hive runes on the walls of the boss room - they only appear with WoS held
  4. Shoot the runes in the order matching the symbols on the locked gate behind the boss (read top-to-bottom)
  5. Gate opens - go through, turn right into the small room, interact with the crystal
Result: "Mysterious Syndicate Activity" markers now appear on your Moon patrol map - these are the 4 crystal locations.

3Find All 4 Crystals (Moon Patrol)

At each marked location: find the green glowing Cabal corpse using the hotter/colder indicator (bottom right HUD). Interact with it, follow the trail of glowing corpses to the Hive door, kill nearby Cabal, then shoot the wall runes in the correct order (match door symbols, top-to-bottom) with WoS held.

  • Anchor of LightTemple of Crota
  • HellmouthChamber of Night - follow glowing Cabal through the long dark hallway
  • Sorrow's HarbourK1 Revelation area
After all 4: Go to the cave below/right of the bridge into Scarlet Keep in Sorrow's Harbour. The mission door appears - launch Oblation: Bloodline.

4Complete the Oblation Missions

I
Oblation: Bloodline
  1. Navigate jumping sections and scan worms by shooting green goo pods with your Weapon of Sorrow
  2. Kill the boss
  3. Do not leave - exit the boss room, go top-left, and interact with the book pedestal
  4. Return to boss room, shoot the symbols again in order → unlocks Oblation: Soulfed
II
Oblation: Soulfed
  1. Look for hidden switches and books - check soulfire hallways, thrall statues, and doors. Drop down in parkour rooms to find them
  2. Kill the boss
  3. Go to the backside of the arena, interact, then shoot symbols matching those on your new exotic weapon (inspect it for the symbol order)
  4. This unlocks Oblation: Immolation
III
Oblation: Immolation
  1. Continue finding hidden books and scanning worm collectibles (green pods) throughout the mission for catalysts
  2. Complete to receive final rewards and triumphs

Catalysts are found in hidden books and worm collectibles across all three missions. Explore thoroughly after each boss - there is no immediate timer once you hit the books.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Avoid These
  • Running Scarlet Keep or Moon patrol without a Weapon of Sorrow equipped - runes stay invisible
  • Wrong symbol order when shooting runes - re-match the symbols on the locked door, top-to-bottom
  • Leaving the mission immediately after the boss kill - you miss catalysts and the next mission unlock
  • Missing one of the 4 crystals even if the map marker disappeared - double-check all 4 locations
  • Using Malfeasance or Whisper of the Worm - they do not count as Weapons of Sorrow
  • Running with a fireteam on the crystal patrol phase - can cause sync issues with rune interactions
