Ultimate Onslaught Boss Strategy
Survive and clear every boss wave in Destiny 2's Ultimate Onslaught mode. Fireteam setups, wave-by-wave tactics, Tormentor handling, and DPS phase execution.
The core challenge: Boss rooms in Ultimate Onslaught throw heavy adds, aggressive Tormentors, and high-health bosses at your team in tight arenas with limited cover. The ADU dies fast if unguarded, and running out of heavy ammo or supers during DPS phases wipes the run. Most failures come from ignoring Tormentors, poor positioning, and not swapping loadouts between add-clear and boss-DPS.
Fireteam Composition
The most consistent setup shared by players clearing high waves:
Use add-clear weapons (MG, Sunshot, Riskrunner) during waves. Rally at the flag before boss rooms and swap to single-target DPS (Leviathan's Breath, rockets, linear fusions, swords). Precision weapons like Forerunner excel against Tormentors.
Boss Room Strategy: Step by Step
-
Enter and Rally
After every 10th wave (10, 20, 30, etc.), go through the portal. Hit the rally flag immediately for full ammo, super, and abilities. Position near the entrance or back of the room for safest angles and natural funneling. -
Prioritize Adds and Tormentors First
Clear yellow-bar adds, Tormentors, and other threats before focusing the boss. Tormentors prioritize Guardians, so stay mobile to draw them away from the group. Break shoulder pads first (precision focus), then stomach. Use Well and tethers to control the room. -
Complete the Optional Objective
Each boss room has a side goal (ignite rift, stand in pool to defeat shielded enemies, capture zones for Shaxx turrets). Completing it weakens the boss or adds helpful turrets. Coordinate with one person calling it out. -
DPS Phase
Stay grouped in Well near the entrance. Focus boss weak points (face or exposed areas). Rotate sides if the boss stomps or charges one direction. Use heavy ammo and supers here. One player can kite/tank (Stronghold Titan jumping over attacks) while others DPS. -
Repeat for Multi-Phase
Later waves (especially Wave 50) have more health and adds. There is no timer after the boss dies, so hang in the room as long as needed. Claim the chest, then continue if pushing for the full 50.
Key Decision Points
-
When to save super and heavy Save for boss and Tormentor spawns (often on waves ending in 3 or 9). Do not burn everything on regular add waves. Having a Well or tether ready for the boss room is more valuable than clearing trash faster.
-
Tank vs. Burn If you have a Stronghold Titan with Lament, let them aggro and kite the boss (jump toward and over the boss, stay at back). Others plink with scouts or dunk sparks. Without a dedicated tank, all-in group DPS inside Well.
-
Battery and Scrap Management Use finishers on yellow bars plus Elemental Siphon orbs for extra scrap. Hunter dodge can cheese throwables for duplicates. Keep the ADU healthy before entering the boss portal.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Ignoring Tormentors. They wreck the ADU and team fast. Do not use rockets or grenade launchers on them (poor against their mechanics). Swap to precision weapons and break shoulder pads first.
- Scattering or leaving the ADU unguarded before the portal. Always have someone near the ADU until the wave is cleared.
- No loadout swap. Raid DPS loadouts are terrible for add-heavy waves. Swap at the rally flag every boss room.
- Poor positioning. Running forward instead of funneling from the back or safe zones. Hold the entrance area and let enemies come to you.
- Wasting Well inside ADU radius. Enemies aggro the ADU more when you cluster on it. Place Well slightly away from the ADU to split aggro.
