Call of Duty MW4 Not on Game Pass at Launch or for Beta
Game Pass will not give you Modern Warfare 4 at launch or early beta access. If you assumed it would work like Black Ops 6 or Black Ops 7, you will hit a locked store page in October. Game Pass add date is Holiday 2027, about a year later.
Core problem: Game Pass will not give you Modern Warfare 4 at launch or early beta access. Microsoft's policy (announced April 2026): new CoDs skip Game Pass at launch and land Holiday 2027, about a year later. Treat MW4 as a full-price buy if you want day-one or campaign-early play. Treat Game Pass as "last year's CoD plus catalog."
1What Is True Right Now
2Decide and Act
-
1
Play the open beta this weekend before you spend anything.
Download the MW4 Open Beta from Xbox, PlayStation, Steam, or Battle.net. No Game Pass, no pre-order required. Use this weekend to decide whether the game is "buy now" or "wait for 2027 Game Pass."
-
2
Check whether you qualify for the Vault Edition loyalty discount before you buy.
Eligible if you own and played a qualifying CoD, or are an active Game Pass Ultimate / Premium / PC Game Pass subscriber and played a qualifying CoD through Game Pass. Discount is about $10 off Vault (roughly $99 to $89). This is the only remaining Game Pass-related money break. It does not put the game on the service.
-
3
Choose one of three paths (see below).
-
4
If you pre-order digitally, buy on the same store you will launch the full game from.
Xbox: Microsoft Store / Xbox app. PC: Steam, Battle.net, or Xbox on PC. Campaign early access is not a Game Pass download, it is a purchased SKU.
-
5
If you only have Game Pass, do not wait for an Xbox notification that MW4 is included.
Xbox has already messaged subscribers: buy if you want day one, Pass starts Holiday 2027. Keep using Pass for BO6, BO7, Vanguard, MWII/MWIII catalog titles. Those stay.
3Three Paths: Buy, Day-One, or Wait
4Key Decision Points
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Will Game Pass get me the beta? | Early weekend: no. Open weekend (now): yes, because it is free for everyone, not because of Game Pass. |
| Should I pre-order just for the beta? | Too late for weekend 1. Weekend 2 is free. Pre-order only if you also want 16 Oct campaign access. |
| Vault vs Standard? | Vault only if you grind Battle Pass / BlackCell. Standard if you are testing. Skip both if you are waiting for Pass or GTA 6. |
| PC store? | After CoD left day-one Pass, players report Steam becoming the default PC store again. Buy where your friends are. |
| Switch 2? | No early-access beta (pre-orders opened too late). Open beta includes Switch 2. Full game is day-and-date. |
5Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Assuming Game Pass Ultimate still equals "day-one CoD plus early beta" like 2024-2025. That perk was removed with the price cut.
- Pre-ordering physical and expecting 16 Oct campaign. Digital only.
- Buying Vault just for beta access. Open beta is free.
- Thinking Xbox Free Play Days this weekend mean the full game is on Pass. It is only the open beta client.
- Waiting until 23 Oct then searching Game Pass. It will not be there.
- Cancelling Game Pass expecting to "force" MW4 onto the service. Catalog CoDs stay, the new one does not move up.
