Modern Warfare 4's extraction shooter — deploy into Hajin, run contracts, fight AI and rival Operators, and get out with your loot. How the mode actually works.
DMZ is MW4's extraction mode. You play an off-the-books asset deploying into the open-world Hajin exclusion zone: take contracts, gather loot and tech, survive AI forces and enemy players, then reach an extraction point. Whatever you extract with is yours to keep — die, and you lose what you carried in.
"Loot, fight, negotiate, betray, and extract" — Activision's own summary. No two deployments play out the same way.
Your persistent command center between deployments — upgrading it is the long-term progression:
| Station | What it does |
|---|---|
| Orders | Picks up missions and contracts for your next run |
| Stash / Loadouts | Store extracted gear, build your deploy kit |
| 3D Printer | Craft gear from collected materials |
| Operators | Manage your operator roster |
| Boss Board | Track high-value target contracts |
| Deploy | Launch into Hajin |
Is DMZ free-to-play? It's part of MW4 — you need the game (early access requires a digital pre-order, everyone else Oct 23). No separate purchase inside.
Does loot carry between runs? Yes — extracted gear goes to your Stash; dying loses what you carried in, not what you've banked.
How do I unlock it? See the DMZ early access page for dates and requirements.
