Goal: Better aiming than analog sticks, without hand cramp, and without a USB mouse. The game does not support one. Joy-Con 2 mouse mode is the only mouse option. Treat it as good-enough CoD mouse, not a PC mouse, and decide whether it beats gyro for you.

1Should You Even Use It

Use mouse mode if
You want more precise camera and aim than analog sticks. You play docked or tabletop with a flat surface next to you. You are okay treating it as good-enough CoD mouse, not a PC mouse. Multiple beta players who had never used mouse and keyboard said it clicked fast and felt better than raw Joy-Cons.
Skip it or treat as novelty if
You play long ranked sessions, have large hands, or expect PC-level tracking. Pre-beta hardware writeups and some players flagged lower DPI, a tall awkward shape, and worse rapid target acquisition than a real mouse. Gyro plus Pro Controller or grip is the other popular precision path.
Decision rule from the beta: casual, campaign, or 6v6 on the couch, try mouse mode first. Sweaty multiplayer or Warzone-style modes, gyro or Pro Controller unless you already like mouse mode after a grip. Handheld, mouse mode is not the play, use sticks plus gyro.

2Step-by-Step Setup

3Key Choices

ChoicePick this ifAvoid if
Right Joy-Con as mouseYou are right-handed and want classic mouse feelYour surface is only on the left
Wrist strap onYou slide on wood, glass, or couchStrap catches on fabric
Mouse shell or 3D gripSessions longer than a few matchesYou only want to test once
Gyro insteadHandheld or you already aim well in Splatoon-style gamesYou specifically want mouse flicks
Sticks onlyYou refuse extra hardwareYou already hate analog aim in CoD
Cross-play is on. Mouse mode does not put you in a PC mouse lobby. You still fight aim-assist controllers. That is why some players felt strong in pubs and others said it was not worth it versus gyro.
