The one mechanic to understand: Judgment — your biggest hit — only works during the short window a shield skill opens: Shield Smite, Warding Strike or Shield Rush (2s each) and Doom Shield (3s). The cooldown removal unlocks at Judgment specialty 16. Build your whole rotation around opening that window.

Skill priority — where points go first

Order used by top global players (official character data, mid-October):

  1. 1
    Judgment

Max first — ~90% of top PvE Templars have it at 20+. Also the stat to look for on rings.

  2. 2
    Vicious Strike

Your combo opener — chains into Decisive and Desperate Strike, and generates Enmity.

  3. 3
    Pummel

Chains into Punishing Strike automatically; level it early for the leveling grind.

  4. 4
    Punishment

A 20m charge that applies the Executor buff (+200 Accuracy, +20% PvE damage for 20s) — keep Executor up permanently.

  5. 5
    Warding Strike

Second priority — one of your Judgment-window openers. Shield Rush is a PvP-leaning pick; most PvE players leave it low.

By level 45 you have ~203 skill points (plus 180 one-time Wisdom Stone points from quests and Seal dungeons) — one skill costs 21 points to max. You can't max everything; Flash Rampage is the most commonly left-low skill.

Stigmas

Slots open at 22 / 27 / 32 / 37; each stigma levels to 20 with Stigma Shards (75 total per stigma).

StigmaVerdict
Doom ShieldIn every build — gap-closer that opens a 3s Judgment window, and at rank 5 resets Annihilate on hit
TauntCore for global — locks the boss on you, lowers its Accuracy and damage while making you tankier. Cast right after Doom Shield so the boss faces you
Shield of ProtectionGuaranteed Block for scripted tank-busters
Battlefield BannerContested — converts Defense into Attack. Strong once your Defense is high; taking it early is a common beginner mistake
Nezekan's ShieldSituational party shield scaled off your Max HP

How the tank actually works

  1. ●
    Fight from the front

The Templar's kit rewards frontal hits (Fury procs, Roar bonuses) while your allies deal more from behind — your job includes turning the boss around.

  2. ●
    Block is a resource

Blocks trigger Fury (+PvE damage for the whole group for 20s) and unlock Debilitating Smash. Endgame builds stack "natural" Block to keep Fury rolling.

  3. ●
    Annihilate on stuns

Against stunned or knocked-down targets it's a huge hit; on immune bosses it still has a 5% proc chance per attack (with the +100% damage specialty).

  4. ●
    Keep passives high

Punishing Benediction, Fury, Ironclad Defense and Insulting Roar are the passives worth feeding through gear.
