The Blood of Dawnwalker 30-Day Family Rescue Time Currency
How the 30-day time currency works in The Blood of Dawnwalker. What spends segments, what is free, shrine and perk strategy, day vs night solutions, and mistakes that waste your family rescue budget.
You have a 30-day / 30-night budget to rescue Coen's family from Brencis. Time is a spendable currency, not a ticking clock. Most players worry they will burn days on the wrong quests, over-level, or miss the family window. The key is knowing what actually costs time, what is free, and when to go to the castle.
What Spends Time vs What Is Free
Spends Segments
- Hourglass quests and major story actions
- Buying perks at a shrine (XP plus time)
- Repairing or activating a shrine
- Some dialogue options and some travel
- Training and skill unlocks behind an hourglass
Costs Zero Time
- Walking the map and sightseeing
- Combat and random enemy fights
- Looting chests
- Watching NPCs and listening
- Most talking and non-committing dialogue
How to Spend the Budget Without Wrecking the Run
Decide your first posture after the prologue
You can walk to Brencis's castle immediately and attempt the rescue. Community consensus: you will be underpowered. Most players use early days to unlock a shrine, get a few key perks, and learn day vs night solutions, not to 100% the valley.
Read every hourglass before you press it
If a side job costs 2 segments and only gives flavor, skip it on a save-family run. Devs said a normal playthrough is aimed at ~80% of content. One run will miss ~20%. That is intended.
Prioritize actions that weaken Brencis or open the castle path
Anti-Brencis activities are higher value than random village favors when the clock is the family. Helping everyone is a different playstyle (revenge or world-state), not the efficient rescue path.
Unlock shrines early, buy perks late and selectively
Fix the first shrine so you can fast-travel and spend points. Do not dump segments into a full tree. Pick the few nodes that change how you solve the next hourglass quest. Every perk is a day you did not spend on the family.
Use gold bribes when the game offers them
Developers explicitly said you can sometimes pay coin instead of time. If you are short on days and rich on gold, take the bribe.
Look for Sanzhana if you need time back
Winged traders buy teeth from the dead and pay in time manipulation, the only widely mentioned way to claw segments back. Treat it as a late recovery tool, not a farm you plan around from hour one.
Match the solution to day or night
Same objective often has a human or hex path by day and a vampire path by night. Spending a segment at the wrong time of day can mean a harder fight or a worse outcome. If you can wait one free exploration period and hit the better window, do that. Waiting itself is free.
When days feel thin, stop side spending and go to the castle
The family timer is only for the rescue. The game does not end if you miss it. Family dies, story shifts, extra content unlocks. You keep playing. If your goal is the family, treat late-game side hourglasses as optional.
Key Decisions
| Choice | Spend If | Skip or Delay If |
|---|---|---|
| Go to castle now | You want the family ending and feel strong enough | You still lack basic shrine and a few combat or traversal perks |
| Buy this perk | It changes a coming fight or day/night route | It is nice to have or completes a tree |
| Help this NPC | It weakens Brencis, saves someone, or costs 1 segment | It costs multiple segments and only adds flavor |
| Bribe vs do the long version | Days are low, gold is high | You want the long version's rewards or story |
| Let the 30 days expire | You want the family lost, revenge, or extra content path | Your stated goal is rescue |
Common Mistakes
- Thinking exploration or real playtime burns days. It does not.
- Treating it like Majora's Mask. No loop, no auto game-over at day 30.
- Buying every perk because the menu has an hourglass. This is the fastest way to arrive at the castle weak and late.
- Assuming every quest is main. All quests compete for the same family budget; none are mandatory except the rescue you choose to attempt.
- Ignoring day or night when an hourglass pops. Wrong window can waste the segment and the fight.
- Panic-rushing after the prologue and skipping the first shrine. Fast travel and perk bench is worth the small repair cost.
