Core problem: Players are stuck on whether to use Omni combat (one-button attack and block) or Directional combat (aim the swing and match the block direction). The community consensus is not "pick one forever." Use Directional as the default for stamina and openings, and fall back to Omni when you panic in a 1v1. Omni is the accessibility option, not the better system.

1The Real Difference

DirectionalOmni
AttackYou pick up, down, left, or rightGame picks a direction for you
Block / parryYou match the incoming directionOne button covers any blockable hit
StaminaCorrect directional block costs no stamina; perfect block can restore itOmni attack and block burn stamina
RiskWrong direction means you eat the hitSafer, but you run dry and get overwhelmed
PayoffPerfect block opens a counter; attacking an open side is harder for them to blockEnemies block random Omni swings more often
This is not Kingdom Come 2. Do not attack the opposite side of their swing to "counter." You block the same direction the indicator or swing is coming from. Players coming from KCD keep getting punished for that habit.

2How to Fight Right Now

Unblockable attacks are flagged in both modes. Neither Omni nor Directional blocks those. Dodge them. The flag is a visual tell on the incoming attack indicator.

3Key Decisions You Will Face

Omni vs Directional for this encounter
Directional defense first, Omni as bailout
Learning, Story, or you hate stick flicks: Omni plus dodge unblockables. Fair, Challenging, or you want the game to click: Directional defense first, mix Omni only as a bailout.
Indicators on or off
Leave them on until perfect blocks are consistent
Arrows are an assist, not the combat mode. You can turn the shield and arrow HUD off and still play directional. Leave them on until perfect blocks are reliable.
Same-direction attack after parry
Use it if you have the perk
Light builds report a perk that guarantees crit if you attack the same direction after a perfect parry. If you have it, use it. Do not invent a KCD-style opposite-side counter.
Duelist mode (indicators off)
Directional only, read animations
In Duelist mode with indicators off, you must read animations. Animals are the worst to read without icons. Create space or accept Omni drain against wildlife.
