Core Problem
Skills, gems, Heralds, auras, and spirit skills (like Convalescence) suddenly refuse to activate with a "Not Usable with Current Weapon Set Settings" error - even when you meet all stat and spirit requirements. This typically happens after swapping weapons, unequipping or re-equipping gems, changing support links, or taking certain passives like Lord of the Wilds. The build feels bricked but it is almost always fixable.

Fix Steps - Do These in Order

1

Re-enable the Skill's Weapon Set Assignment

This fixes the issue instantly for most players.

  • Open your Skills menu/tab.
  • Click or hover the broken skill or gem to expand its details.
  • Find the small arrow or "damage" section in the tooltip (use advanced tooltips if needed).
  • Check the boxes for Weapon Set I and/or Weapon Set II - whichever matches your active weapon. These get silently unchecked after gear changes.
  • Skills must be explicitly tied to the active set - swapping does not auto-fix hidden unchecks.
2

Check Stat Requirements for Both Sets Separately

  • Switch between Weapon Set I and II using the hotkey or UI button.
  • Check your Str / Dex / Int / Spirit totals in each set - they differ based on equipped gear.
  • Ensure the active set fully meets the skill's requirements. Support gems raise requirements (e.g. a support adding +Int).
  • To boost stats for only one set: click the set icon (I or II) on the passive tree before allocating points. One point can be split across both sets effectively.
3

Quick Workarounds for Persistent Bugs

  • Equip a temporary different weapon in the problem set, activate the skill, then swap back.
  • Drop the gem on the ground and pick it back up, or remove and re-add it.
  • Gem overwrite fix (for deeply bugged gems): craft a lower-level version of the same skill gem from inventory (not the skills tab). Equip the low-level one, open its tooltip, then quickly drag the bugged high-level gem over it while re-checking weapon set boxes. This overwrites the bugged assignment.
Tip: the gem overwrite trick is the community's go-to fix for gems that resist all other solutions.
4

Restart or Progress Past the Bug

  • Restart the game client - UI desyncs after large changes and a restart often clears them.
  • Some players report skills self-fix after zoning or progressing through Act transitions.
  • Last resort: recraft the gem entirely. You will temporarily lose Jeweller's orbs and links but the gem will be clean.

Key Decision Points

One Weapon or Two Sets?

You can equip the same weapon in both sets - no need for two different weapons unless you are optimising different passive nodes or skills per set. Using one weapon in both sets simplifies setup considerably and avoids most of these errors.

Weapon Set Points on the Passive Tree

Only invest in split weapon set points if your two sets use heavily different skills or passives (e.g. crossbow to build combo, then swap to staff). Click the set icon (I or II) before allocating. Most passive nodes apply to both sets by default - do not split everything.

When Should You Actually Swap?

Weapon swapping is strongest for combo plays - build stacks or conditions with one weapon then swap to activate a different skill. Note that instant swapping resets some buffs (e.g. runic ward). Always test in a safe area before relying on it in a boss fight.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

x Assuming inactive set stats apply. Only the currently active set's stats count for skill requirements.
x Ignoring support gem stat costs. Supports can push requirements above your current pool without warning.
x Over-editing weapon set toggles. Rapidly toggling set assignments back and forth can break the selection state and lock skills out.
x Taking Lord of the Wilds or similar keystones without testing. These passives interact with Herald and aura skills in unexpected ways and will trigger the error.
x Not restarting after large changes. The UI can desync after swapping multiple gems or gear pieces at once. A restart is the fastest fix.
