Onimusha Way of the Sword Yellow Red Blue Soul Upgrades

How the yellow, red, and blue soul system works in Onimusha: Way of the Sword. Color meanings, absorption timing, Oni Armament loop, Break Issen choices, and upgrade priorities.

Soul System Yellow: Heal Blue: Oni Gauge Red: Upgrade Currency
Core Goal

Stop treating yellow, red, and blue souls as the same pickup. Players keep dying while vacuuming, wasting red on the wrong upgrades, and leaving souls on the ground because they do not know what each color actually buys.

What Each Color Does

Yellow: Health
Your main heal in a fight. Do not treat items as the default healing method.
Blue: Oni Power
Fills the Oni Power gauge for Oni Armaments (Two Celestials, hammers, bow and spear later). Armament hits also spit extra yellow, so blue turns offense into healing.
Red: Upgrade Currency
Spent later to enhance gear and learn or upgrade abilities. Not a mid-fight heal.
i
Hold R1 / RB / R to absorb. You can walk while sucking, but you cannot defend. That is the whole skill check.

Fight Loop: Do This in Order

1

Kill or stagger first

Do not start the vacuum while someone is still swinging.

2

Glance at the floor and prioritize

Grab yellow first if your bar is low. Grab blue if the Oni gauge is empty and you want an Armament. Red can wait a beat unless the fight is already over.

3

Vacuum while circling, not standing still

Movement is allowed. Blocking is not. Keep moving while absorbing.

4

Pop Two Celestials when the Oni gauge is full

Use it on the tanky enemy. Those kills dump yellow so you can heal while you keep attacking. The loop: blue, Armament, yellow, stay alive, more red.

5

Finish leftover red after the room is clear

Clean up any remaining red souls before they fade.

!
On the expanded demo boss Daidara, souls sitting on the ground get eaten. Vacuum between his big swings or you lose the upgrade bank for the rest of the fight.

Break Issen: The Decision That Matters

When a big enemy or boss opens Break Issen, body parts are color-coded:

Red mark (often head): Extra damage

Pick damage if the boss is about to kill you or you just want the phase over.

Purple mark (chest): Extra souls

Pick souls if you are healthy and you need red for the next Magic Mirror or Spirit Mirror upgrade.

i
True Issen kills also dump more souls than a normal last hit. If you can land it, do that instead of a sloppy finish.

Where Red Gets Spent

Red is not used on the field. Take it to a Magic Mirror or Spirit Mirror and infuse weapons, armor, and abilities. Early priority:

1

Sword and core attack upgrades

So rooms die faster, which means more souls per minute.

2

Defensive skill you actually land

Deflect Issen is the one people call forgiving.

3

Oni Armament and extra ability nodes

Once you can consistently fill blue.

Capcom is sending a free Materials Pack: Red Souls I DLC after the demo hit 10 million Issen. Claim it on the store when it drops so you do not start the full game dry.
