Onimusha: Way of the Sword - Break Issen Boss Timing
Deflects are what actually empty the boss stamina bar. When it hits zero the boss staggers, you press attack immediately, and pick the right body part before the prompt auto-selects.
Core problem: regular Issen is high-risk and inconsistent on bosses. What actually works is draining the stamina/posture bar with deflects until the boss staggers, then hitting Break Issen. The timing people struggle with is not "when the swing starts" - it is the last instant before contact, plus the 1-2 second body-part prompt after the stagger.
1Set Up the Break Issen (Empty the Bar)
- 1Watch the boss stamina/posture bar under their health.
Attacks, parries, and especially deflects drain it. Deflects do more stamina damage than parries.
- 2Do not hold block through whole strings.
That drains your stamina and gives you nothing back.
- 3Deflect (block + attack as the hit lands) on most weapon attacks.
Use a perfect dodge on punches, kicks, and grabs - those cannot be parried or deflected.
- 4Regular Issen only on the 1-2 attacks per boss with a generous window.
Usually overheads or big wind-ups. Community consensus: many attacks are 2-frame; overheads are often around 8-frame and worth going for.
2Execute Break Issen (Exact Input)
- 1Boss staggers.
Stamina bar emptied, boss loses balance.
- 2Press light or heavy attack immediately.
Do not wait for a flashy prompt to appear first.
- 3A short body-part prompt appears (colored marks).
You have only a couple of seconds before the game auto-picks.
- 4Pick the part:
Red = high HP damage, usually head or a weak point. Purple = more souls and less damage. Some bosses have unique parts (limbs, armor plates, a partner) that disable a move or strip armor.
Key Decisions
Common Mistakes
- Pressing attack at the start of the swing instead of the last moment before contact. If Musashi starts a normal swing, you were too early.
- Spamming attack after a stagger and missing the Break Issen window.
- Taking purple souls while a boss still has armor (especially Benkei), then chipping plates the slow way.
- Trying to Issen every attack on Carnage or late bosses. Every boss has one or two "meant to be Issen'd" moves; the rest should be deflects that feed the stamina bar.
- Ignoring audio. A sword clang/rattle, a rising whoosh, or a grunt at the apex of the wind-up is a more reliable cue than the visual white glimmer on large bosses.
