Onimusha Way of the Sword Parry vs Deflect Inputs
Parry, Deflect, and Issen are three distinct tools, not two names for the same thing. Here are the exact inputs, timing windows, when to use each, and the practice loop that builds Fervor.
Players keep mixing up Parry and Deflect because both use L1 or LB. They are three distinct tools: Parry, Deflect, and Issen. Each has a different input, a different timing window, and a different purpose. Pick the hold-block-plus-extra-button control scheme while learning, then switch to the stricter single-button layout once the windows feel automatic.
1The Three Inputs
2Practice Loop
-
1
Watch the first swing of a basic sword Genma. Do not attack.
Just hold L1 the whole time so you get used to the block animation.
-
2
On the next swing, tap L1 right as the blade is about to touch you. That is Parry.
You should see the redirect animation and the enemy stumble or fly.
-
3
Same enemy, now hold L1 the entire time and tap Square or X the moment contact happens. That is Deflect.
Notice the bigger stamina drop and that a mistimed tap still leaves you blocking.
-
4
Once those two feel consistent, try Issen on the same weak enemy
Do nothing until the last possible frame, then press attack. If your sword even starts swinging early, you were too soon.
-
5
Against archers or mixed groups, default to Hold L1 plus attack-button Deflect
Arrows come back or drop. Switch to timed L1 Parry on the melee guys who get close.
-
6
After 2-3 successful Parries in a row you enter Fervor or Blaze
That is the signal to start pressuring instead of just defending.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Treating Parry and Deflect as the same input. The animation and stamina drain are different. Parry is timed L1. Deflect is hold L1 plus attack button.
- Pressing attack too early while trying Issen. You just trade hits. Wait for the last possible frame.
- Spamming L1 instead of timing it. The window shrinks if you mash.
- Using Deflect on everything because the window is huge. Bosses take forever. Parry builds the buff and opens better follow-ups.
- Ignoring the control-scheme option in settings. Switch to the hold-block-plus-extra-button layout if the single-button version feels too tight.
