Onimusha Way of the Sword Issen Parry Timing Guide
True Issen is not a parry and not a perfect dodge. You press attack a fraction of a second before the enemy hit connects. Here is the exact timing, fail diagnostic, Chain Issen, and the safer Deflect Issen training method.
Core problem: True Issen is not a parry and not a perfect dodge. You press attack a fraction of a second before the enemy's hit connects. The window is tighter than a normal parry. Most players miss because they swing when the enemy starts the attack (too early) or wait until contact (too late).
?What Issen Actually Is
1Step-by-Step: Land True Issen on Purpose
-
1
Start on basic katana Genma only
Stand still and let them swing. Do not fight groups while learning.
-
2
Watch the animation, not the wind-up
Do not press when they raise the sword. Press when the swing is already coming down and is about to touch you, right before you get hit.
-
3
Use the fail diagnostic
See the diagnostic box below. Adjust early or late on the next identical attack.
-
4
Repeat the same enemy until it sticks
Muscle memory is the whole method. Veterans still miss on new moves. One precise press, no mashing.
-
5
Expand to the next attack type
Then move to wheel or roller enemies where the whole body is the hitbox. Time contact, not the start of the roll.
-
6
Optional training crutch: Deflect Issen first
Learn late block into flash or ring into attack. Safer. Then drop the block and use raw attack for True Issen.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Treating Issen like Sekiro deflect or a perfect dodge. It is an attack input on their hit frame, not a guard or dodge.
- Pressing when they start the swing instead of at impact. The window is at the end of their animation, not the beginning.
- Practicing on the boss first instead of trash katana enemies. Learn the timing on predictable fodder first.
- Mashing. One precise press. Mashing causes early inputs.
- Ignoring that some attacks are better parried or dodged. Grabs and guard-breaks cannot be Issen'd. Issen is not mandatory to beat fights.
