Gothic 1 Remake
Gothic 1 Remake - Best Warrior Build
The pure Strength warrior is the most forgiving first-playthrough build. No mana juggling, no scarce arrows - just high Strength for raw damage and melee skills that compound naturally. This guide covers exact stat ratios, weapon milestones, and when to invest in Two-Handed.

Core stats
What to invest and what to skip
Strength (STR)
Core - invest first
Directly increases melee damage via the formula: weapon DMG + STR - enemy armor. Every point matters from the first level. Stack this before anything else.
Target: 30 by level 4, 50-60 by mid-game
One-Handed Weapon
Core - early priority
Level 1 unlocks better swords and enables blocking. Without it, your attacks are weak even with high STR. Learn from a trainer as soon as you can afford it.
Ratio: 3 STR : 2 One-Handed per level early
Two-Handed Weapon
Secondary - mid game
Transition to Two-Handed once mid-game weapons become available. Higher damage ceiling than One-Handed. You do not need full One-Handed mastery before switching.
Unlock via Thorus (Old Camp) or camp-specific trainers
Dexterity (DEX)
Skip - no value for melee
DEX affects hit chance for ranged weapons only. Pure warriors get zero benefit from investing here. Any points spent on DEX are wasted.
Do not invest. Zero points needed.
Progression
Step-by-step build path
-
1Levels 1-4: Stack STR and One-Handed Level 1Use the
3 STR : 2 One-Handedratio per level. Target 30 STR and 30 One-Handed skill by level 4. This handles wolves, goblins, and the early game's hardest threats without getting stuck. Find the closest warrior trainer after leaving the starting area and invest your points immediately. -
2Join Old Camp and find key trainersOld Camp is the recommended path for pure warriors. It gives natural access to
Thorus, who trains Two-Handed later. The Warrior Guild path fits the build's identity. New Camp is viable if you want to skip straight to Two-Handed via specific tricks, but Old Camp is more straightforward for beginners. -
3Mid-game: Push STR to 50-60 and unlock One-Handed Level 2Continue the STR push after joining camp. Unlock
One-Handed Level 2before transitioning to Two-Handed weapons. Farm ore from defeated enemies and loot STR-boosting rings and items whenever available - they stack with base STR for damage calculation. -
4Learn the attack animation cancelAfter every sword swing, strafe or move to cancel the recovery animation and immediately start the next attack. This significantly increases your effective DPS against all enemies. Players who skip this technique consistently deal 30-40% less damage in real combat. Practice it early until it becomes automatic.
-
5Transition to Two-Handed once requirements are metGet the Two-Handed skill from
Thorus(Old Camp) once your STR is high enough. Two-Handed has a higher damage ceiling and better late-game weapons. You do not need to fully master One-Handed first - the transition mid-path is fine.
Weapon milestones
Target weapons by stage
| Stage | Weapon | Requirement | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Early | Basic swords / axes | Low STR | Grab from loot or cheap traders. The specific weapon matters less than hitting your STR targets. |
| Early-Mid | Scar's Sword | ~45-50 STR | Key community-recommended weapon. High damage that carries through the majority of the game. Get this as soon as you meet the requirement. |
| Mid | Rusty Two-Handers (Smithies) | Two-Handed skill | First upgrade after transitioning to Two-Handed. Buyable from smithies. Immediate damage upgrade over One-Handed alternatives at this stage. |
| Late | Lee's Axe | 90 STR | 105 damage. One of the top late-game weapons accessible on the warrior path. |
| Late | Innos' Rage | High STR | 102-110 damage. Endgame tier. STR investment from early game pays off here. |
Key decisions
What to choose and why
-
Which camp to join?Old Camp for the classic warrior path and the best Two-Handed trainer access via Thorus. New Camp works if you want to skip straight to Two-Handed via camp mechanics, but Old Camp is more forgiving for first-time players.
-
One-Handed or Two-Handed first?One-Handed Level 1 first for blocking and early weapon access, then transition to Two-Handed mid-game. You do not need to fully max One-Handed before switching. The transition is natural once better Two-Handed weapons appear.
-
Should I add magic or crossbow? Not on the first playthrough. Pure warrior is the recommended beginner path precisely because it avoids mana and ammo management. If you want magic, add light healing runes only after your melee stats are solid. Never split points early.
-
When to buy from trainers? After a base STR investment of 20-30 first, then spend on skill levels. Buying One-Handed or Two-Handed skills with low STR means your attacks do almost nothing even with the technique unlocked.
Common mistakes
What players get wrong
- Dumping all points into STR with zero weapon skills. High STR with Level 0 weapon skill results in weak attack animations and frustrating combat against even basic enemies. Always pair STR increases with weapon skill investment.
- Investing in DEX or crossbow early. These are entirely separate combat systems. Every point spent here is permanently unavailable for STR or melee skills. The warrior build has no use for DEX.
- Skipping the attack animation cancel. Swinging and waiting for the full recovery animation halves your effective DPS. Strafe after every swing. This is not optional - it's how melee combat is designed to work.
- Not farming ore and STR rings. Enemies drop ore and STR-boosting items regularly. Skipping these means slower stat scaling. Loot everything, sell what you don't need, buy trainer sessions with the gold.
- Trying a mage first playthrough instead. Magic builds require rune hunting, mana management, and specific item knowledge. Warrior is recommended first precisely because it lets you focus on the story and world without resource pressure.
