Gothic 1 Remake Best Starter Build
Gothic 1 Remake punishes wasted LP hard. The community consensus for new players: 1H Strength warrior is the safest, most forgiving path that still scales into a powerful mid and late game character.
LP Investment Order (Do This First)
This is the single most important guide decision in Gothic 1 Remake. Wrong LP order wastes your first 15-20 hours.
| When | Spend LP on | Why |
|---|---|---|
| First 10 LP | Must One-Handed Weapons Level 1 (Scatty or Cord trainer) | Biggest early power spike. Massively improves attack speed, combos, and damage with basic swords. Nothing else comes close for immediate impact. |
| Next 10-15 LP | Must Strength (aim for 20-30 total) | Directly boosts melee damage and unlocks better weapons. Handles most Chapter 1-2 threats once you hit ~25 Strength. |
| When exploring | Soon Lockpicking Level 1 | Cheap and opens early chests for ore and gear. Worthwhile if you enjoy exploration - skip if you want pure combat investment. |
| Chapter 2+ | Later One-Handed Level 2, more Strength, or 2H transition | Once you have a solid base, upgrade weapon mastery or pivot to 2H for better endgame scaling. |
| Chapter 3+ | Later Magic (optional hybrid) | Mana is scarce early. Add circles of magic only after melee is solid if you want a hybrid character. |
Chapter 1 - Step by Step
-
1
Stick with Diego and loot everything in the intro area
Grab the Pickaxe from the first mineshaft entrance. Find the Old Sword under the hanged man after the first scavenger encounter. Pick up all nuggets, ore, and loot chests. Sell junk immediately - this builds starting ore fast.
-
2
Reach Old Camp and find a 1H weapon trainer
Scatty runs the arena in Old Camp. He trains One-Handed Weapons Level 1. Alternatively Cord in New Camp is cheaper for early training. Spend your first 10 LP here before doing anything else.
-
3
Farm safe XP with weak enemies and escort quests
Hunt juvenile scavengers and lurkers near the rice farm - they are manageable with early 1H skill. Do the Mordrag and Baal Parvez escort quests (they help kill enemies for free XP along the way). Avoid dangerous areas until you have 20+ Strength and decent armor.
-
4
Upgrade weapons as Strength grows
Lurker's Bite is an accessible early upgrade. Move to Battle Sword or Stone Crusher as Strength hits 20-25. Always check the Strength requirement before buying - carrying a weapon you cannot equip wastes ore.
-
5
Join Old Camp for trainer and armor access
Old Camp gives easiest access to Strength trainers, armor upgrades, and guard quests that build ore income. Recommended for first playthrough. You can still explore all camps freely after joining.
Weapon Progression
Key Decision Points
| Choice | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| 1H vs 2H weapons | Start 1H - faster attacks, cheaper training early, works well through Chapter 2. Switch to 2H later when Strength is high and better 2H weapons are available. Do not max 1H mastery if planning to go 2H endgame. |
| Which camp to join | Old Camp for new players - best trainer and armor access, straightforward quests. New Camp works too but requires more navigation. |
| Bow / Dex skills | Skip - bows need arrows that cost ore constantly, and Dexterity does not help melee. Keep all LP on Strength and weapon skill for first playthrough. |
| Magic / mage circles | Chapter 3+ - mana potions are scarce early. Focus melee until Chapter 3 then add magic as optional hybrid layer if you want variety. |
| Lockpicking | Level 1 is cheap and worth it early if you explore actively. Skip if you want pure combat efficiency. |
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Dumping all LP into Strength before getting One-Handed Weapons Level 1 - high Strength with slow attacks still feels terrible. Weapon skill first, then Strength.
- Spending ore on expensive trainers or non-combat skills before having solid weapon training and 20+ Strength - you will struggle through Chapter 1 fights.
- Ignoring combat timing (dodge with Q/E, parry, counter-attack window) - Gothic combat is timing-based, not button mashing. Practice the rhythm on weak enemies before fighting tough ones.
- Overextending into deep forests or dangerous zones before having armor and at least 20 Strength - you will die repeatedly and waste time.
- Buying a weapon you cannot equip yet - always check the Strength requirement before spending ore on upgrades.
