Core Problem

The old Build button now activates your Pocket Item instead. Most players drop in not knowing how to bind it, which item to pick for their playstyle, or when to swap at vending machines. This guide covers the full setup in order - binding first, then choosing, then adapting mid-game.

Step-by-Step Setup

1

Bind the Pocket Item Key (Do This First)

The pocket item bind is buried in the old build section. Many players miss it entirely and play without it.

Binding Steps

  1. 01

Open Settings then go to Keyboard & Mouse (or Controller).

  2. 02

Find the Build section or search for "Switch Mode".

  3. 03

Rebind it to something easy - most players use Z on keyboard, or whatever your old build button was on controller.

  4. 04

The pocket item icon appears in the bottom right of your HUD. Press your bound key to throw/activate it (it arcs like a grenade).

Verify first: Test in a Creative map or early in a match before relying on it in a fight. The item throws with an arc - aim slightly ahead of your target, not directly at it.
2

Choose the Right Pocket Item for Your Playstyle

You spawn with one equipped (usually Shockwave by default). All three have unlimited uses but share roughly a 30-second cooldown. Pick based on how you play, not what others use.

Shockwave Grenade

Mobility

Launches you or teammates a long distance with no fall damage. Best item for rotations, high ground, chasing eliminations, or repositioning mid-fight.

Best for: aggressive/solo push playstyle, final circle rotations, third-partying

Med Mist Grenade

Sustain

Creates a healing mist cloud on impact. Area effect heals you and nearby squadmates. Throw during fights or on downed teammates for area healing.

Best for: squads, holding positions, post-fight recovery, protecting revives

Shield Bubble

Defense

Throws down a temporary bubble that blocks bullets and projectiles from outside. Plant it before pushing a contested point, during revives, or to break line of sight.

Best for: squads in defense, pushing contested zones, reviving downed teammates

Quick decision rule: Solo or aggressive? Shockwave. Squad holding a zone? Shield Bubble or Med Mist. If your loadout already has good heals, pick Shockwave for movement flexibility.
3

Swap at Vending Machines Mid-Game

Your starting item may not fit the late game. Vending machines let you swap at any point during the match.

How to Swap

  1. 01

Find a Vending Machine near POIs - they're scattered around the map and reliably stocked.

  2. 02

Interact with it (costs around 50 gold bars).

  3. 03

Select your preferred item - it replaces your current one instantly.

Best time to swap: after landing safely early game, or during a safe mid-game rotation when the next zone is far. Don't wait until final circles to realize your item doesn't fit.

Advanced Usage Tips

Shockwave

  • Throw at your feet for a fast launch straight up or outward
  • Throw ahead of you for maximum horizontal distance
  • Combo with pickaxe sprint (unlimited stamina) for fast rotations
  • Can launch squadmates too - call before throwing

Med Mist

  • Throw directly into an active fight for mid-combat healing
  • Throw on downed teammates to help multiple people at once
  • Strong when you already have high ground or position advantage

Shield Bubble

  • Place before pushing into a contested zone - walk in safely
  • Use during revives to block incoming fire
  • Breaks line of sight to force enemy repositioning

Key Decision Points

Early game - stick or swap?

Keep your spawn item until you finish looting and assess the game. Only swap if your starting item clearly doesn't fit your loadout (e.g., you have no heals at all, grab Med Mist early).

Which item for final circles?

In solo or duo final circles, Shockwave almost always wins - being able to reposition instantly is more valuable than healing or defense when the zone is tiny. In squads with a good position, Shield Bubble or Med Mist can hold the last ring.

Cooldown management in fights

Don't spend your pocket item on a minor rotation and find yourself in a fight with it on cooldown. Save it for fights whenever possible. Cooldowns reset on death and reboot.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Forgetting the bind exists

Playing entire matches without a pocket item because the bind wasn't set up. Bind it in settings before your next match.

Spamming the button mid-fight without a cooldown plan

Using Shockwave to escape one fight and having no movement for the next engagement 20 seconds later. Use it with intent, not on reflex.

Not swapping when the game demands it

Hoarding your default item all game even when the zone and situation have changed. Hit a vending machine in the mid-game if your item isn't working.

Ignoring the vending machine swap option entirely

Many players don't realize you can swap pocket items at all. Check vending machines the same way you check for weapons - they're worth the gold cost.

Bug: item not spawning or inventory switching issues

Rare but reported. If you drop without a pocket item, hit a vending machine immediately. If inventory toggling breaks, rebind or restart the match.
