Malenia Boss Strategy Guide
The community-consensus approach to beating Malenia - how to counter Waterfowl Dance, exploit bleed/frost, and stay aggressive enough to stagger her before she heals.
Level 120-150+
Bleed / Frost Build
Aggressive Stagger Approach
Why Malenia is Different
She heals on every successful hit - including blocked hits. Blocking does not protect you. Offense is your defense: stay aggressive, stagger her often, and apply bleed/frost to outpace her regeneration.
Preparation
Level & Stats
120-150+ recommendedVigor 50-60 minimum. Respec at Rennala if needed.
Weapon
Powerstanced bleed weaponsDual curved swords, Bloodhound's Fang, Nagakiba, or frost/bleed hybrid
Summon
Mimic Tear +10Best for drawing aggro and applying status procs passively
Talismans
Bull-Goat + Dragoncrest Greatshield+ Rotten Winged Sword Insignia or Lord of Blood's Exultation for bleed
Consumables
Freezing Pots (key item)Craft with Rimed Crystal Bud from Consecrated Snowfield. Keep in quick pouch.
Armor
Medium/light for roll iframesOR heavy for poise. Never full blocking - it heals her.
Bleed - Fast procs, constant stagger
Frost - Burst damage, combo with bleed
Phase 1 Fight Flow
Opening Move
Run in and attack first - she starts passive. Two-hand your weapon and jump attack or R1 chain. She staggers in 2-3 hits. Take the initiative immediately.
Core Loop
-
1
Two-hand and attack (jump attacks or R1 chain)Jump attacks deal poise damage and trigger stagger fast. This prevents her from starting big combo sequences.
-
2
On stagger: 1-2 more hits, then retreat immediatelyDo not greed. Staying in after a stagger is the most common death cause. Back off, let her recover, bait her next move.
-
3
Watch for her next attack, punish the recoveryDodge INTO most attacks - her right side is generally safest. Each punish window gives 2-3 hits maximum.
-
4
Let bleed/frost procs do the heavy liftingEach proc deals massive damage and can trigger stagger. Mimic applies additional status procs while she's focused on you.
Waterfowl Dance - Counter Options
Waterfowl Dance (WFD)
#1 Run Ender
Backup: Bloodhound's Step (iframes) or Vow of the Indomitable on a shield. Practice both options - Freezing Pot interrupt first.
Other Dangerous Moves
Grab
Lethal if caught
- She winds up her left shoulder before the grab
- Dodge away from her - not sideways
Lunge + Aerial Slams
Punishable
- Lunge: Sidestep into it - dodge toward her as she commits
- Aerial slams: Strafe away from the landing spot
Phase 2: Transition and New Moves
Phase Transition
Lock on, run toward her then immediately strafe right to avoid the rot bloom opener. This is your window to heal and reapply buffs/grease while she's in the animation.
New Phase 2 Attacks
- Clones: Run far away. Dodge only the final clone hits (left or right). The earlier projections pass through.
- Plunges/Explosions: Circle around her or roll toward her when she descends.
- Same core aggression as Phase 1. Mimic continues to split her attention.
- Avoid finishing a riposte at the end of Phase 1 at very low HP - the Phase 2 transition can catch you mid-animation.
Key Decision Points
| Decision | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Summon or solo? | Use Mimic Tear for your first kill. It splits aggro and applies status passively. Go solo after you know the patterns well. |
| Bleed or frost? | Bleed for faster procs and frequent staggers. Frost for bigger burst damage. Bleed/frost hybrid is the top community pick. |
| WFD approach? | Freezing Pot interrupt is the most reliable method. Learn the dodge sequence as backup for when pots run out. |
| How many hits per window? | 2-3 hits maximum after a stagger. Back off immediately. Greed after staggers is the single most common cause of death. |
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Blocking or guarding. Every blocked hit heals her. This cannot be overstated - shields are not the answer here. Roll-dodge only.
- Constant retreating and passive play. Backing away constantly loses the poise pressure that keeps her from starting big combos. Stay in her face.
- Greedy hit chains after stagger. After a stagger, she recovers fast. The extra 2 hits you try to land often put you directly into Waterfowl Dance or a hyper-armor attack.
- Vigor below 50. A single combo kills you at low Vigor. Respec into Vigor before attempting this fight.
- No bleed or frost on your weapon. Fighting Malenia with pure physical or no status makes the fight dramatically harder. Status procs outpace her healing.
- Rage-quitting after deaths. The fight pattern clicks after repeated practice. Most players report that WFD suddenly becomes readable around attempts 10-20. Take breaks when tilting.
