Core Principle
In Elden Ring, weapon upgrades matter more than character levels. A +4 or +5 weapon at base level outperforms an unupgraded weapon at level 30. Your path to beating early bosses without leveling is through gear, summons, and flask upgrades, not stat grinding.
What You Need
Starter class weapon upgraded to +3 or higher, at least one spirit ash summon, 4+ HP flask charges with enhanced strength, and knowledge of boss combo patterns. Total prep time: 30 to 60 minutes of exploration.

Step-by-Step Preparation Route

1

Choose Starting Class

Class selection matters for RL1 runs

Pick a class with strong starting gear and low stat investment:

  • Samurai: Starts with Uchigatana (bleed buildup), longbow, and good armor. Best overall pick for no-level runs.
  • Vagabond: Starts with a broadsword, halberd, and shield. Good for parry-focused players.
  • Wretch: True RL1 challenge. Starts at level 1 with nothing. Only for experienced players.

Do not spend runes on leveling. Save every rune for weapon upgrades via smithing stones.

2

Gather Smithing Stones & Upgrade Weapon

Limgrave Tunnels - northwest of Church of Elleh

Head to Limgrave Tunnels (northwest of Church of Elleh). Mine Smithing Stones [1] from the glowing ore deposits along the tunnel walls. There are 3 to 5 stones in this single dungeon.

Return to the Church of Elleh grace and use the anvil to upgrade your starting weapon to +3 or higher. A +3 Uchigatana or Broadsword deals significantly more damage than the base version.

Why this matters: Weapon upgrade level is the single biggest damage multiplier in the early game. Each +1 adds roughly 10 to 15% base damage. This is your substitute for leveling.

3

Collect Spirit Ash Summons

Early caves and catacombs around Limgrave

Spirit ashes are the key to winning boss fights at low level. They distract the boss, split aggro, and give you safe windows to attack.

  • Lone Wolf Ashes: Found in Church of Elleh area (given by Ranni's servant after meeting Melina). Three wolves that harass and stagger.
  • Skeletal Militiaman Ashes: Found in Death-touched Catacombs (west Limgrave, along the cliffs). They respawn after dying, providing sustained distraction.
  • Wandering Noble Ashes: Found in Stormfoot Catacombs (west of Church of Elleh). Cheap to summon, good for pulling aggro.

Upgrade ashes at Roderika (Stormveil entrance) using Ghost Glovewort [1] from catacombs. Even a +1 upgrade extends their survival significantly.

4

Upgrade Flasks with Golden Seeds & Sacred Tears

Churches and tree stumps across Limgrave

At low level, your HP pool is tiny. Flasks are your survival tool. Collect:

  • Golden Seeds: Found at minor Erdtree stumps after defeating the Erdtree Guardian. 3 early seeds are accessible in Limgrave and Weeping Peninsula without fighting main bosses. Each seed adds one flask charge.
  • Sacred Tears: Found in churches. Third Church of Marika (northeast Limgrave) and Church of Pilgrimage (Weeping Peninsula) each have one. Each tear increases flask healing amount.

Target: 4 to 5 HP flask charges with at least one Sacred Tear upgrade before fighting Margit.

5

Optional: Grab Bloodhound's Step

Gatefront Ruins - defeated Night's Cavalry drop

At night, a Night's Cavalry boss spawns near Gatefront Ruins (south of Church of Elleh). Defeat it (on Torrent, hit and run) to get the Bloodhound's Step Ash of War.

This ash gives a quick dash with brief invulnerability frames. Apply it to your weapon and use it to dodge through boss combos that normal rolls cannot escape. It is the single best mobility tool for RL1 runs.

Margit Fight Strategy (Low Level)

Boss Difficulty at RL1
Margit is the first major wall. At base level, 2 to 3 hits will kill you. Expect 20 to 50 attempts to learn his patterns. This is normal and expected for no-level runs.
1

Phase 1 - Sword and Hammer

100% to 60% HP

Summon spirit ashes immediately at the fight start. Lone Wolves work best for splitting his attention.

Learn his three main combos:

  • 3-hit sword swing: Dodge into the third swing, then punish with one hit. Do not overcommit.
  • Delayed hammer slam: He raises the hammer, pauses, then slams. Dodge late, not early. The delay is designed to bait early rolls.
  • Leap attack: He jumps and slams down. Roll backward, then run in for a jumping attack during recovery.

Use Bloodhound's Step to reposition quickly when he targets you. Stay at mid-range to bait his leap, which has the longest recovery window.

2

Phase 2 - Holy Dagger & Hammer

60% to 0% HP

Margit adds holy dagger throws and a hammer sweep combo. The daggers home slightly, so dodge sideways, not backward.

His hammer gains a holy extension that increases range. Stay close to him to avoid the extended tip damage, and dodge sideways through the sweep.

Key opening: After his 4-hit combo (sword, sword, hammer, hammer), he pauses for 2 seconds. This is your punish window. Land one heavy attack or a critical if you are behind him.

If your spirit ash dies, resummon immediately if you have enough FP. Without the distraction, Margit will focus you exclusively.

Godrick Fight Strategy (Post-Margit)

Prep Before Godrick
Upgrade your weapon to +5 or +6 using Smithing Stones [2] from Stormveil Castle. Grab the Fire Grease or Fire Ash of War from the castle - Godrick is weak to fire damage. Collect Nepheli Loux's summon sign outside the boss room for an NPC ally.
1

Phase 1 - Axe Combos

100% to 50% HP

Summon Nepheli Loux and your spirit ash at the start. Godrick will split aggro between them, giving you free damage windows.

His axe swings are slow but have long reach. Dodge sideways, not backward. After his 3-hit combo, he pauses. Land one hit, then back off.

Apply Fire Grease to your weapon before entering. Fire damage adds a burn tick that chips his HP during your downtime.

2

Phase 2 - Grafted Dragon Arm

50% to 0% HP

Godrick grafts a dragon arm and gains fire breath attacks. Run sideways when he winds up the breath, not toward or away from him.

His slam attack creates a shockwave. Jump to avoid it, then punish during recovery.

Keep Nepheli alive as long as possible. If she goes down, rely on Bloodhound's Step to dodge his extended combos. One hit per opening is the rule at low level.

Key Decision Points

Weapon Upgrades vs. Leveling

Always choose weapon upgrades over leveling. A +5 weapon at level 1 deals more damage than a +0 weapon at level 25. Smithing stones are the RL1 player's primary progression path.

When to Use Spirit Ashes

Always summon in boss fights. The community consensus is that spirit ashes are part of the game design, not a crutch. They trivialize learning by giving you breathing room to observe patterns.

Explore vs. Rush Boss

If you are stuck on a boss, leave and explore. Clear side caves for smithing stones, catacombs for ghost glovewort, and churches for flask upgrades. Do not force the fight until your weapon is upgraded and flasks are enhanced.

Parry vs. Dodge

Parrying is high-risk, high-reward at low level. If you can consistently parry Margit's sword swings, it opens him for a critical. If not, stick to dodge-and-punish with Bloodhound's Step.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

x Rushing Margit with no upgrades or summons. This is the most common failure. Base weapon plus no spirit ash equals death in 3 hits. Do the prep route first.
x Farming runes for levels instead of exploring. Leveling Vigor from 10 to 15 adds 150 HP. A Sacred Tear adds 30% flask healing, which is worth more in practice.
x Ignoring boss patterns. RL1 wins come from 20 to 50 attempts of learning move sets, not from stats. Each death teaches you a new combo timing.
x Dodging early on delayed attacks. Margit's hammer slam and Godrick's axe swing have intentional delays. Wait for the downswing to start before rolling.
x Overcommitting on punish windows. At low level, one hit per opening is the rule. Trying to land a full combo gets you killed by the next attack.
x Neglecting Torrent for open-world fights. For bosses like Tree Sentinel and Night's Cavalry, fighting on Torrent with hit-and-run is viable and saves flask charges.
