WARDOGS Closed Beta Access and Refund

The WARDOGS Closed Beta is live for a short weekend window. Pre-order is the reliable way in, and the developers explicitly encourage refunding if the game is not for you. Here is how access works, how the refund actually functions with the separate Playtest app, and what mistakes to avoid.

Pre-order = guaranteed access Refundable before Early Access No NDA

Two ways in, one reliable path right now

The WARDOGS Closed Beta runs for a short weekend window (approximately 17:00 UTC Aug 21 to 02:00 UTC Aug 24, 2026). Pre-order volume blew past expectations, so free invites from the Request Access pool are limited and slow. The reliable path is pre-ordering the standard edition, which grants immediate access via the separate Playtest app. Developers explicitly encourage trying the beta and refunding if it is not for you.

Check if you already have access

1Look in your Steam library for "WARDOGS Playtest". This is a separate app from the main pre-order title.
2Pre-order buyers get it automatically. Some earlier alpha players and selected Request Access users also received it.
3If it is there, download and launch. Pre-load was available starting Aug 20. The Playtest app is what you actually play this weekend.
4Refresh or restart Steam if you just pre-ordered and the Playtest has not appeared yet.

If you do not have access: free vs guaranteed

Free: Request Access

Click Request Access or Join the Playtest on the WARDOGS Steam store page. This enters a pool. Because pre-orders exceeded expectations, free invites are not being handed out aggressively. Success is not guaranteed and many are still waiting. Good if you do not mind possibly missing the weekend.

Guaranteed: Pre-order standard

Pre-order the standard edition (around $39.99). This grants immediate Closed Beta access via the Playtest app. Supporter Edition (around $49.99) also works but is not required for beta access. This is the route community consensus says is realistic right now.

Developers have repeatedly said they want people to test and refund if the game is not for them. They will not hold it against you. This is explicitly encouraged, not a loophole.

Pre-order and launch the Playtest

1Go to the WARDOGS Steam page and purchase the standard pre-order.
2After purchase, the WARDOGS Playtest appears in your library. It may take a short refresh or Steam restart.
3Download and launch the Playtest. The beta has no NDA, so you can freely share clips and streams.

Play and evaluate

Matches are large-scale: up to 100 players, three teams, cash economy, building and destruction, vehicles, and proximity chat. Give it a proper try before deciding. Community posts mention server scaling is being watched, occasional crashes, and some team-killing complaints, but many are enjoying the tactical feel.

Refund if it is not for you

The hours you play are on the separate Playtest app, so they do not count against the main WARDOGS title's playtime. Standard 2-hour and 14-day rules are not the limiting factor here the way they would be post-release. Multiple players confirm you can play the full weekend and still refund the pre-order.
1Because this is a pre-order (Early Access is Sep 10), you can request a refund at any time before the full release.
2In Steam: library, right-click WARDOGS (the pre-order), Manage, Request Refund. Or use Help, Steam Support.
3State that you tried the beta and it was not for you. Players on X are actively reporting successful refunds for crashes, dislike of systems, and so on.

Choices to make

Free lottery or paid guarantee?

Free Request Access has very low odds right now because devs prioritized pre-order volume for server testing. Paid pre-order is reliable and refundable. Pick based on how much you want to play this weekend.

When to refund?

Do it before Early Access launches on Sep 10 if you are unsure. After release the normal Steam 2-hour and 14-day rules apply more strictly.

Standard or Supporter Edition?

Standard (around $39.99) is enough for beta access. Supporter Edition (around $49.99) also works but is not required unless you want to support the project.

Refund over early hiccups?

Some players refunded too early over temporary queue or server issues. Give it a proper try first, since launch weekend hiccups are expected for a stress test.

Mistakes to avoid

XAssuming Request Access will get you in quickly. Many are still locked out while pre-order players are already in. Free invites are limited right now.
XThinking playtime on the beta will block the refund. It does not, because of the separate Playtest app plus pre-order status. Players confirm full-weekend play and successful refunds.
XBuying the Supporter Edition just for beta access. Standard is enough. Supporter is only if you want to support the project.
XWaiting and missing the short window. Beta ends early Monday UTC. If you want to try it, act before the window closes.
XRefunding too early over temporary queue or server issues. Give it a proper try first. Launch weekend hiccups are expected for a stress test.
XExpecting free keys or widespread friend invites. Community posts show limited personal shares, not a public invite system.
