Hell Let Loose Vietnam US vs NVA Commander Abilities
US wins with helicopters and timed firepower. NVA wins with tunnel lattice and cheaper, repeatable pressure. Here is what each Commander actually has, the decision points, and the sequences that win games.
The game is an infrastructure fight. US and NVA Commanders do not have the same toolkit. Players keep losing because they spend munitions like it is WW2 HLL, ignore faction logistics, or dump big abilities before infantry can take the ground. US wins by converting Hueys and Napalm into new garrisons. NVA wins by converting connected tunnels into bodies on the point before the US can reset.
1What Each Commander Actually Has
2US Commander: How to Beat Tunnels
-
1
Nodes plus two safe garrisons first
2nd and 3rd cap-zone garrisons. Commander owns the rear safety net. SLs own the knife-fight OPs.
-
2
Supply Huey loop to keep 3-4 usable garrisons
Choose the Huey unless the LZ is too hot to land. Airdrop is loud, slow, and expensive. Tell the pilot the exact grid and whether you want a garry or nodes.
-
3
Recon pass to answer one question: which flank is real
-
4
Precision or Napalm on the exposed tunnel or garrison
Drop Napalm only when all three are true: a tunnel or garrison is marked, friendly infantry is already staged one grid off, and you need the residual fire to block NVA from reconnecting.
-
5
Transport Huey drops an SL behind that hole, they build before the fire dies
-
6
Hold munitions for the next lattice, not vanity kills
3NVA Commander: How to Not Waste the Advantage
-
1
Nodes plus first tunnel connected to a mid garrison
Build a connectable lattice: HQ-adjacent tunnel to mid to active sector. After Patch 1.3 you get fewer replacements, so every tunnel must be a highway, not a vanity hole.
-
2
Cheap supply drop or boat crates onto the next planned exit
Any SL can run a boat with two supply crates and plant a river-edge garrison. That is your cheap Huey equivalent.
-
3
Emergency Tunnel only after US commits a cap
Use it as a counterpunch. Link it immediately. Tell the team the travel path in command chat. Unlinked emergency tunnels are the number one NVA self-nerf.
-
4
Multi-arty the US spawn cluster that appears after they react
-
5
Rebuild one new tunnel on the 10-minute cooldown, not three half-built holes
4Quick Decision Map
| Situation | US call | NVA call |
|---|---|---|
| Enemy spawn marked | Precision, then infantry | Precision or multi-arty if several marks |
| Need a new attack spawn now | Transport Huey + SL, or supply Huey crates | Emergency Tunnel linked to existing lattice |
| Enemy flooding one grid | Napalm the approach and hold the far side | Reinforce with connected tunnel behind them |
| Logistics failing | Stop airdropping, assign a supply pilot | Boat plus cheap drop on the river line |
| Ability is up but team is dead | Hold | Hold |

Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Spending munitions the second they tick. If the team is not in position, you traded resources for a highlight.
- Not warning SLs before Napalm, bombing, or arty. Friendly-fire on your own push is how US throws won games.
- US Commander living on airdrops and never spawning supply or transport Hueys. Airdrops are loud, slow, and expensive.
- NVA Commander placing tunnels that do not connect, or dumping Emergency Tunnel in a sector nobody will travel to.
- Ignoring nodes. No income means you lose the mid-game ability war.
- Fighting the other faction's doctrine. US sitting still on one garry. NVA peeking open ground into US optics and armor.
- Commander building next to spinning rotors. Rotors delete friendly garrisons.
