1666: Amsterdam How the Timelines Connect
The 1666, 1999, and present-day timelines are not separate campaigns. They form one closed loop driven by a ritual consciousness transfer. Here is exactly how the three eras lock together.
Core problem: players finish the prologue confused about how the three time periods relate. The connection is not free-form time travel. It is a ritual-driven consciousness transfer that creates a narrative circle: present-day Clio deciphers a book that triggers visions of 1999, where Aaron performs a ritual that sends his consciousness into the body of the cat that Noa chooses in 1666. The cat is Aaron. The loop closes when the cat leaps into Noa's arms.
↻The Loop at a Glance
1What Each Era Actually Does
2How the Loop Works Step by Step
-
1
1666 / late 1665: Noa's Commencement
You play Noa, a Zaindaris apprentice becoming the Collector. At the sacred tree ritual she must choose a companion cat. The cat that leaps into her arms is not a normal familiar. It is Aaron, sent back from 1999.
-
2
Present day: Clio in the library
Clio investigates the mysterious letter or tome (Nuxefer/Noxifer) left by her father. She works with Professor Lucas. Search the library, talk to the professor, locate the right book or object, hand it over. This produces a vision that drops you into 1999.
-
3
1999: Millennium Eve with Aaron and Agnes
Follow then play Aaron and Agnes through Amsterdam to their hotel. Agnes performs an occult ritual involving mirrors around the bed. The ritual sends Aaron's consciousness backward. He wakes as the cat at the exact moment Noa is choosing her familiar.

4
You play the cat, navigate back to the tree
The cat (Aaron) navigates back to the sacred tree and leaps into Noa's arms. This closes the loop the prologue sets up.
-
5
After the prologue: switching continues
You switch between Noa (witch, day investigation plus night Esbat confrontations) and Aaron-as-cat (platforming, unlocking doors, later limited possession of fearful NPCs in 1999 sections). Clio remains the occasional narrator and translator of the chronicle.
3Key Decision Points
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Treating the three eras as separate campaigns. The 1999 ritual is the mechanism that places Aaron inside the 1666 cat. Clio's book is the frame that lets you witness it. It is one loop.
- Ignoring floating text and signs in the 1999 hotel. They mark the exact path of the letter Clio later reads. Missing them makes the present-day investigation harder.
- Expecting combat or open exploration in the prologue. It is almost entirely walking, ritual interaction, and timeline jumps to establish the connection.
- Assuming you can freely time-travel at will. Switches are story-gated or contextual: Noa to cat in 1666, occasional 1999 returns, rare Clio beats. You cannot jump eras freely.
