1666: Amsterdam Prologue: Which Cat Companion to Pick
During Noa's ritual at the sacred tree you choose one of nine cat companions. The choice has no gameplay effect in the prologue. Every pick becomes the same black cat, Aaron. Here is the full list and how to choose.
Short answer: Pick whichever description appeals to you for role-play or atmosphere. Every option results in the exact same black cat (Aaron, whose consciousness arrives from 1999), with identical animations, behavior, and abilities. The only difference is the short flavor text you read. Many players initially treated it like an RPG class pick and were surprised it is purely cosmetic at this stage.
1How to Reach and Make the Choice
-
1
Progress through the early 1665 sequence as Noa
Play until you reach the sacred tree and ritual clearing, after gathering Lux energy and related interactions.
-
2
Hold the concentrate button and aim at the tree
L2 or LT on a controller (check your bindings). Aim toward the tree and the cats in its branches.
-
3
Hold the analyze button to inspect the cats
R2 or RT. This reveals the list of nine options with their descriptions. Do not skip this step or you miss the flavor texts.
-
4
Select any cat from the menu and confirm
Confirm when prompted ("Union Cat chosen..."). The selected cat jumps to Noa and the sequence continues identically regardless of pick. You later control the cat (Aaron) in short playable sections.
2All Nine Companion Options
Descriptions paraphrased from what appears on-screen. None of these alter gameplay in the prologue.
3Which One Should You Pick?
-
1
Choose purely on the description that resonates
Common picks mentioned in playthrough chatter include The Dreamer, The Page, The Wildling, The Guardian, or The Spirit, simply because the text appealed. There is no correct, best, or meta choice circulating.
-
2
Treat it as flavor until proven otherwise
Some players speculate the choice might unlock different abilities, personality, or bonuses in the full Early Access or full game, because the descriptions feel class-like. Nothing is confirmed or observable in the prologue.
4Common Mistakes to Avoid
-
Overthinking or restarting for a "better" cat. It changes nothing in the prologue. Do not waste time rerolling.
-
Skipping the analyze step on the tree. You miss the full flavor texts that give the choice its atmosphere.
-
Assuming it is a permanent class that alters combat, magic, or stealth right away. It does not. The cat is the same in every playthrough of the prologue.
-
Looking for hidden stats or different cat models. They are the same black cat (Aaron) every time.
