TL;DR: "Character creation timed out" means the server didn't answer your create request in time - almost always launch-window overload, not a problem with your name or account. First check your character list: the character often was created despite the error. If not, wait a few minutes and retry once - hammering Create can trigger the separate "creation is currently throttled" lockout.

Did your character actually get created?

The timeout happens after the request is sent - the server may finish it anyway. Check before you retry.

  1. 1
Back out to the character list

Leave the creation screen and look at your realm's character list. If your new character is there, you're done - the error lied.

  2. 2
"Name already taken" on retry = it saved

If re-entering the same name now says the name is taken, the character was created under that name - check the realm and the character list again.

  3. 3
    Log out and back in

A stale session can hide fresh characters. Players reported the new character appearing only after a full relog.

Getting through when it's still failing

  1. 1
    Wait 5-10 minutes between attempts

The timeout is load, and load comes in waves. Community troubleshooting also warns that rapid retries can trigger a temporary creation lockout - slow is faster.

  2. 2
    Restart the client

Full quit and relaunch clears a wedged session state that keeps every attempt timing out.

  3. 3
    Flip the ruleset selector

If the ruleset picker is greyed out or stuck, select a different ruleset, go back, and retry - a workaround Blizzard support has relayed for stuck options.

  4. 4
Try a quieter ruleset or off-peak

PvP realms are the bottleneck. If you're flexible, creation on a less crowded ruleset goes through; or come back in a few hours when the rush dips.

Errors it gets confused with

MessageWhat it actually is
Character creation timed outServer didn't respond to the create request - usually launch overload. The character may still have been created.
"Creation of that type of character is currently throttled"A separate limiter - too many creations on that ruleset/faction or too many rapid attempts from you. Wait it out.
"This faction is currently unavailable due to population imbalance"A temporary lock on the dominant faction of a PvP realm - nothing you did, pick the other faction or wait.
"That name is restricted"A name-filter bug Blizzard acknowledged and fixed via realm restarts - ordinary names containing "con" (Connor, Falcon) were wrongly refused. Retry after restarts.
"No realms are currently available"Realm list failing to load - a different error (WOW51900309).

FAQ

Why does character creation keep timing out in WoW Forever?

Launch-window server load. Millions of name reservations and characters hit the creation service in the same window - the server stops answering in time and the client reports a timeout.

Did my name get reserved if creation timed out?

Possibly - check your character list first. If retrying the same name says "name already taken," it was saved. During the reservation window the same behavior applied: the timeout didn't prove the name was lost.

How long until it works?

During the heaviest waves players reported 30-60 minutes of failed attempts, then it suddenly went through. Off-peak hours and quieter rulesets have the best odds.

Do I need the Skyborne pack to create a character?

No - the paid packs gate early access perks and the Skyborne race, not basic character creation on launch realms.

Is spamming Create safe?

No - rapid repeated attempts are linked to the "creation is currently throttled" lockout. Space attempts by minutes, not seconds.
