Welcome to Elderfield: Launch Day One Guide
Welcome to Elderfield launch day one guide. Pick the right difficulty, talk to Farmer Hans first, clear Ghost Tentacles with Cleansing Balm, and avoid the sleep and bath traps that wreck new players.
Goal: Get a clean farm plot running, survive nights without a curse spiral, and reach the mall with food and a pickaxe, without wasting Cleansing Balm or dying to a cozy sleep. Players coming from the demo keep getting stuck on the same things: picking the wrong difficulty, sleeping and bathing like a normal farm game, leaving ghost tentacles on the field, walking into the mall or woods undergeared, and treating every dice roll as flavor instead of a mechanic.
1Pick Difficulty First
- 1Choose Cozy Mode if you want the vibe, NPCs, farm, and mysteries with fewer punishment loops.
- 2Choose the harder setting if you actually want turn-based combat, resource tension, and sleep and moon events to matter.
- 3Remember Flee in Terror.
In combat you can skip your turn and roll to escape home. Players treat that as a real tool, not a joke.
2First Hour: House, Notes, Then Hans
- 1Use the house as a hub.
Save, cook, watch the news, change appearance, stash items. Players who skip the news miss a lot of what is wrong today context.
- 2Talk to Farmer Hans immediately.
His early tasks are the on-ramp: prove you can grow wheat, then later craft the Giant Skull Chalice. Completing The Farmer's Path is what opens the grinder and Chef Elroy's recipes. Demo players who ignore Hans stay locked out of the farm loop.
- 3Buy seeds and tools from Old Man Crawford on the farm.
Do not wander west or into the woods first.
3Clear the Field Before You Plant
- 1Crop plots start covered in Ghost Tentacles.
You need Cleansing Balm to clear a tile before it will take a seed. Balm is semi-rare early. Do not spray it on every tile.
- 2Clear 2 to 4 plots and plant wheat first.
Hans asks for it.
- 3Water like a normal farm game.
Expect crows and weird harvests later. Teeth, eyeballs, and so on come after the basic loop.
- 4Flowers around the house are placed from inventory like decor.
Not tilled like crops.
4Sleep and Bathing Are Not Free Heals
- 1Sleeping can lift a curse or give you one.
Moon type at midnight matters. Skipping sleep a day or two is possible. Stacking many nights is how people get wrecked.
- 2Bathing fully restores HP and MP and clears many curses and blessings.
It also regenerates monsters and mysteries. Use it after a dungeon run, not before you go exploring, or you just restocked every fight.
- 3There is an early warp-to-bed spell with no MP cost.
Players use it as a reset, knowing enemies come back.
5Treat Dice Rolls as Gameplay
- 1Trash cans, loot, haunted objects, mysteries, and sleep events can all roll a die.
Luck matters. Do not mash interact on every bin if you are low HP on a hard setting.
- 2Mysteries can hide 0 out of 7 results.
Read the roll before you commit.
6Combat: AP, Food, Flee, Then Mall
- 1Tutorial fight.
Learn AP and Flee in Terror.
- 2Beginner mine near the workshop.
Copper, stone, coal, weak enemies.
- 3Mall food court mines.
Buy a Basic Pickaxe from the Mall Rat just inside. You need mall ores for Hans's Skull Chalice. Beginner mine is not enough.
- 4Do not go to the Old Woods at level 6 with pizza.
Dev reply on Steam: on normal, think level 10 to 15 plus iron-tier gear. Estate bosses are easier than woods.
Key Decision Points
| Decision | Safer Launch-Day Choice | Why Players Say So |
|---|---|---|
| Cozy vs challenge | Cozy if you want farm and romance first | Full mode makes sleep, dice, and fights the loop |
| Clear 2 plots vs whole field | 2 to 4 wheat plots | Balm is limited |
| Bath before mall vs after | After | Bath respawns enemies |
| Push woods early | No | Gear and level gate is real |
| Fight vs Flee in Terror | Flee if the roll is bad | Escape home, skip gold loss on some settings |
Common Mistakes
- Playing it like Stardew energy and time. There is not the same stamina gate. Combat and dice are the pressure.
- Sleeping every night on autopilot. Sleep can give you a curse, not just lift one.
- Bathing right before a dungeon. You just restocked every fight.
- Planting on uncleared tentacle tiles. The seed will not take.
- Ignoring Hans or skipping wheat. You stay locked out of the farm loop and the grinder.
- Entering woods or later mall floors in starter food and no iron. The gear gate is real.
- Forgetting the Tax Man shows up on a schedule on the farm path.
