Shroom and Gloom Two Decks Combat vs Explore
You build two decks at once. Combat wins fights. Explore is how you grow combat, heal, open rooms, and set the next fight. Most deaths come from treating Explore like filler and walking into the next encounter with leftover energy and no plan.
Core problem: There is no block. You take hits. Explore is your sustain and your upgrade engine. The deck swap is the whole game: spend Explore before you commit to the next doorway, because Explore energy does not carry over into Combat.
1How the Two Decks Interact
-
1
Between rooms you hold the Explore hand
Energy here is spent on tools: rest, bash, shovel, keys, dummy, food, map.
-
2
Walk far enough into an enemy room and the game swaps decks
Explore energy does not carry over. Unused Explore plays are gone for that stretch.
-
3
After the fight you are back on Explore
Combat food you created, like roast, toasty, or soup, often becomes the fuel you spend outside the next fight.
2The Loop: Do This Every Room
-
1
Stop at the interaction. Do not walk first.
Look for lock glints, black X dig spots, torches, dummies, chests, camp spots. Drag the matching card onto the world object.
-
2
Spend remaining Explore energy on growth, not sightseeing
Follow the priority order below. Energy resets when Combat starts, so unspent Explore is wasted.
-
3
Only then walk into the next combat
Walking early is the number one self-own.
-
4
In Combat: cook, do not turtle
Roast, season, and skewer so kills become Toasty or food. Eat when you need HP or when a Combat card scales off eating. Soup and pot lines turn a pile of corpses into one Explore payoff later.
-
5
After the fight, immediately spend the new Explore options
New dummy, new shovel proc, leftover jerky, max-HP loop. Do it in the hallway, not after one more room.
3Explore Energy Priority Order
- Practice Dummy and training toolsUpgrade a Combat card you will actually keep. Fatal-on-kill scalers and eat-synergy weapons. Dummy is how small stabs become run-winners.
- Shovel and digPermanently injects a new weapon into Combat. Use it when you can afford the cost. This is how Combat stops being three Stabs.
- Rest, Tent, and food past full HPIf you have a heal-over-max card like Well Knitted, rest while already full. Max HP is your block substitute.
- Key vs BashKey if you have it, usually consume and 0 energy. Bash if you are healthy and want to save the key. Bash costs HP. Do not Bash at 8 HP just because.
- Map, light, and junk 0-costs lastSpend leftover energy here only after the above.
4Key Decisions
| Choice | What players do |
|---|---|
| Heal now vs upgrade now | Upcoming elite or boss and you are not full: rest or food. Healthy and you have Dummy in hand: Dummy first. A plus 2 on a fatal card pays more than 9 HP. |
| Key vs Bash | Key is free and consumes the card. Use on the lock that gates a reward, not every decorative padlock. Bash pays HP. Fine if you have overheal and want to keep a key for later. |
| Add a Combat card vs thin the deck | Shovel adds cards. Good early, bad if Combat is 20+ unfocused hits. After 1 or 2 scaling weapons, start removing or evolving weak Stabs instead of digging every X. |
| Eat in fight vs save food for Explore | Eat in fight if you will die this turn. Save a Toasty if Explore has an eat-to-grow chain like Everlasting Truffle plus Fruiting Limb. |
| When to slim Explore | Explore with 12+ one-off tools bricks Dummy and Rest. Consume keys, exhaust spent shovels, forget dead cards at frog spots. Explore wants repeatable engines, not a junk drawer. |

Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Walking into the next room with 2 Explore energy still unspent. That energy is gone when Combat starts. Spend it first.
- Bashing every door at low HP. Bash costs HP. Use a key or wait until you are healthy.
- Digging every weapon into Combat until the deck is sludge. After 1 or 2 scaling weapons, stop digging and start thinning.
- Never eating. There is no block pile to hide behind. Food is how you survive.
- Upgrading a card you will delete. Dummy the fatal-scaler or the eat-weapon, not a Stab you will remove.
- Treating Rest only as emergency heal. Overheal is how you stack max HP. Rest while full if you have a heal-over-max card.
- Saving keys for later then dying on a bash you did not need. Spend the key on the lock that gates a real reward.
