Shroom and Gloom Eat Roast Mushroom Enemies
Stay alive by roasting mushroom enemies into Toasties and eating them for HP, or saving them to cook soups. This game gives you almost no traditional blocking or potion heals. Roast is one of your only reliable heals, and wasting a Toasty snowballs into a dead run.
Core goal: You take chip damage every fight and there is little block. HP only comes back by eating. Roast a mushroom enemy on the killing blow to turn it into a Toasty, then eat it now or save it for a Soup Pot. Failing to land the fatal Roast means no food, and no food means a dead run.
1How Roasting and Eating Works
-
1
Play Roast, the starter combat card. It deals 3 damage
If that hit kills the enemy, it creates a Toasty card. A Roast that does not kill deals damage only, no food.
-
2
Toasty is food. Play it to eat the roasted enemy and recover health
Commonly 5 HP on the basic version. It is usually consumed when you eat it.
-
3
Other prep cards also turn kills into food
Season, Skewer, and Flambe can make better food, like Gourmet Toasty or multiple Toasties at once.
-
4
In Kitchen or camp rooms, place a Soup Pot
Feed saved Toasties and other edibles into it to brew soups that give bigger heals or run-changing buffs.
2What to Do in a Fight
-
1
Look at enemy intents and HP first
Identify who you can actually finish this turn with Roast.
-
2
Soften first if needed
Play Stab or Flash, which adds Vulnerable so they take more damage, so Roast can be the killing blow. A Roast that does not kill gives no food.
-
3
Land Roast as the fatal hit whenever you can afford the energy
That is the whole point of the card.
-
4
Decide immediately: eat the Toasty now or hold it
Eat now if you are already hurt or the next enemy swing will drop you. Hold it if you are healthy and you expect a Kitchen or Soup Pot soon, or you have cards that trigger extra effects when you eat later.
-
5
End turn only after you have converted at least one kill into food if your HP is not full
Conventional just-kill-everything leaves you starved for heals.
3Key Decisions
| Choice | What players do |
|---|---|
| Roast vs other attacks for the last hit | Always prefer Roast or another fatal-makes-food card on the killing blow, unless you desperately need the extra damage of a bigger attack to survive this turn. |
| Eat now vs save for soup | Early rooms: eat to stay above danger HP. Once you have a Soup Pot down, start banking Toasties. Players who souped up basic Stab and Roast decks reported easy demo clears. |
| Spend energy on Roast when an enemy is timid | If an enemy will cancel its attack when damaged, hit them first so they waste their turn, then Roast something else for food. |
| Kitchen room choice | Soup Pot vs training dummy or seasoning station. If you are bleeding HP, take the pot. If your attacks are still tiny, season or upgrade Roast and Stab first so future kills produce food more reliably. |

Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Using Roast when the enemy will survive it. You spent the energy and got no Toasty. Soften first, then Roast the killing blow.
- Eating every Toasty the moment you get it even at full HP. You lose the chance to cook stronger soups. Hold food when you are healthy.
- Ignoring food entirely and trying to out-damage fights. There is little block. HP only comes back by eating.
- Forgetting Toasty is a card in your combat hand and deck. It can clog draws if you hoard too many without a pot.
- Skipping Kitchen structures because the fight looked easy. Later biomes punish that. Take the pot when you are bleeding HP.
