Orbitals Split-Screen vs Friend Pass Demo
Orbitals is 2-player only. The screen stays split-screen in local play, GameShare, and Global Friend Pass. Here is which mode to use, what the free local demo actually gives you, and how it differs from the full Friend Pass invite.
Figure out which Orbitals mode to use so you and a partner can actually play. Stop mixing up the free local demo with the full Friend Pass. They are not the same thing. The free app dropping on the eShop at launch does two jobs. Do not treat them as one.
1Pick the Mode That Matches Your Hardware
| Situation | What to use | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Same room, one Switch 2, two controllers | Full game or Friend Pass demo | Local split-screen. Demo equals opening chapter only. |
| Same room, second person has Switch 1, Lite, or OLED | Local GameShare (owner has Switch 2 plus the game) | Play together locally. GameShare can reach older Switch hardware. |
| Different houses, only one of you owns the game | Owner invites into Global Friend Pass or Online GameShare | Full campaign. Still split-screen on each console. NSO required for both. |
| Different houses, both own the game | Online play from owned copies | Full campaign. Still split-screen. NSO required. |
2Step-by-Step
-
1
Try it for free on the couch (this is the demo)
On a Switch 2, download Orbitals: Global Friend Pass from the eShop (free at launch). Sit together on one console with two full controllers (Joy-Con pairs or equivalent). Official replies say each player needs a full controller for local play. Start the demo inside that app. It is local co-op only and covers the opening chapter. Use this to test camera, tool swapping, and whether you both like the split-screen feel before anyone buys.

2
Play the full game on one TV
Buy one copy. Same setup: one Switch 2 plus two controllers. No Friend Pass needed. No NSO needed.
-
3
Play the full game when the other person does not own it (online)
Owner launches the full game. Friend installs the same free Global Friend Pass app. Owner sends an invite to the Friend Pass player. They join the entire campaign for free. Alternative if both have Switch 2: Online GameShare plus GameChat. Still only one copy needed. Both need Nintendo Switch Online.

4
Include a Switch 1 in the same room
Use Local GameShare from the Switch 2 that owns the game. That is the path community posts keep pointing at when someone only has an original Switch.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Thinking the Friend Pass app is the full game. Without an owner invite, you only get the local opening-chapter demo.
- Expecting the demo to work online or across two consoles. It does not.
- Showing up to local play with one Joy-Con each or a single controller. You need a full controller per player.
- Starting an online session without NSO on both accounts.
- Assuming GameShare gives each player their own full view. It does not. Split-screen stays.
- Waiting for matchmaking. The official account pointed people toward Discord if they do not already have a partner. There is no public find a random co-op partner pitch in the discussions.
