Machine Party Couch Co-op: How to Join
Couch co-op is on the same machine only (v2.0+). No room code, no Steam invite. A second player joins by pressing a button on their own controller in the Local lobby. You cannot play alone.
Goal: Get 2-4 people on one PC into a Local lobby and actually start a session. Couch co-op is on the same machine only (v2.0+). There is no room code and no Steam invite for this path. A second player joins by pressing a button on their own device in the Local lobby. You cannot play alone. Minimum two people, one person in Local with no second device will sit there forever.
1Before You Launch
- 1Plug in every controller before you start the game.
Extra virtual pads, racing wheels, and companion apps confuse join slots.
- 2Decide who uses keyboard and mouse.
That person counts as a full player. Four people only need three controllers.
- 3Update the game on Steam so you are on v2.0 or later.
Older builds have no Local menu.
2Join the Lobby (Exact Order)
- 1Launch Machine Party on the one PC you will all sit at.
- 2On the main menu, open Local (not Online or Join Room).
Online rooms are a different flow and will not pick up extra pads on this PC.
- 3Pick a mode.
Arcade is fastest for a party night. Original is the full structured session. Custom lets you pick which simulations to run.
- 4Wait until you are on the lobby screen.
Do not mash buttons on the main menu. Pressing buttons before the lobby loads makes people think the pad is broken.
- 5Each extra player presses any button on their own controller.
That press is what creates their slot. The keyboard player is already in.
- 6Every joined player types a name, then picks cosmetics.
Ready is locked until both are done. This is the step people skip and then wonder why nothing starts.
- 7Ready up last. When everyone is ready, a 5-second countdown starts.
Changing names, cosmetics, or who is in the lobby cancels the countdown. Sit still until it hits 0.
- 8After a match you return to the same lobby.
Names and cosmetics are kept. You do not re-join from scratch unless someone dropped their pad.

Quick Decisions
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Using Join Room or a room ID thinking couch guests type a code. Local has no code. It is button-press to join on the same PC.
- Pressing buttons before the lobby loads. Then assuming the pad is broken. Wait for the lobby screen first.
- Readying before names and cosmetics are finished. Ready stays locked on purpose until both are done.
- Fiddling with settings during the 5-second countdown. It resets the countdown. Sit still.
- Launching with DS4Windows, Steam Input, and native Xbox drivers all stacked. Pick one path. Stacked drivers break slot detection.
- Expecting public matchmaking. There is none. Local is people on this couch, Online is a private ID you send.
