What's Changed - Read This First

Critical: The new Portal system replaced the old Director for all power progression. Non-Portal content (old patrols, legacy strikes outside Portal) does NOT give power-progressing drops. Everything below assumes you are running Portal activities.
Don't waste time on: Old patrol zones, legacy strikes not in the Portal, older destination activities. These give no meaningful power gains in 2026.

Step-by-Step Power Leveling Path

1
Claim your returning player boost at the Tower

Head to the Tower first. Claim the Welcome/returning player chest near Zavala or Saint-14. This gives you gear pushing toward ~300 power immediately - your free head start.

2
Run the current expansion campaign

Launch Renegades (or Edge of Fate) from the Portal's top-left section. Play on Legend difficulty if comfortable for better rewards. Most returning players hit 350-400+ base power just from the campaign plus side activities. This also reorients you to current mechanics and story context.

3
Grind Portal activities based on your current power
Early (~0-350) Solo Ops playlist (Caldera or K1 on Training/Default). Short, solo-friendly, quick runs. Complete training tiers first.
Mid (350-450) Fireteam Ops (strikes/battlegrounds) or Arena Ops. Matchmade and efficient. Add 1-2 modifiers to push your grade.
High (450+) Pinnacle Ops or higher-difficulty runs with modifiers. Aim B+ or higher grades for bonus loot multipliers and bigger power jumps.
4
Target weak slots and chase Prime Engrams

Use the green engram targeting icons to direct drops toward your lowest-power gear slots. Prime Engrams have no weekly cap and drop strong upgrades - portal performance (grades, challenges) directly improves their quality.

5
Do seasonal dailies and weeklies alongside Portal runs

Check the top-right seasonal section for daily/weekly orders, Vanguard Alerts, and the reward track. These give XP, currencies, and extra powerful drops with minimal additional time investment.

Power is now account-wide - level your main first, then alts benefit from the same scaling automatically.

Key Decision Points

Campaign first or pure grind?

Do the campaign for the free power bump and story reorientation. Skip only if you purely want speed - but most returning players recommend it for getting your bearings back.

What difficulty should I run?

Start on Training/Expert for fast completions. Add modifiers for B+/A grades once comfortable - the reward multiplier is worth the extra effort. Avoid pushing into Master/GM early if it drastically slows your runs.

PvE Portal vs Crucible Ops?

Both work for power progression. PvE Portal is more consistent and predictable. Crucible Ops is valid if you prefer PvP - both give current gear drops.

Which expansion to prioritize?

Focus on Renegades (current expansion). It lets you hit max power solo. Older expansions are less efficient for power gains.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

x
Grinding non-Portal activities

Old patrols and legacy strikes outside the Portal give zero meaningful power progression in 2026. This is the #1 time waster for returning players.

x
Ignoring grades and modifiers

Low grades mean weaker drops. Once you can reliably clear at a difficulty, always add modifiers to push your grade to B+ for the loot multiplier.

x
Getting lost in Portal menus

The Portal UI is confusing for returning players. Use the active quest markers to launch your next activity directly rather than navigating the full menu tree.

x
Hoarding old gear

Replace gear as higher-tier drops come in. The new tier system (1-5) has meaningfully better stats and perks at higher tiers - old gear holds you back.

x
Leveling alts before your main

Power is account-wide now. Get your main to high power first - alts will benefit from the scaling automatically, making them much faster to level.
