TL;DR: Level as Frost. The new Ice Lance deals massive bonus damage to Frozen targets, and Fingers of Frost treats your next spells as if the target were Frozen - combined with Shatter and Ice Shards you crit constantly while mobs never reach you. Quest one mob at a time, or gather packs and AoE them down with Frost Nova, Blizzard and Cone of Cold once you're comfortable.

Which spec to level

Frost - fastest & safest

Frostbolt slows everything, Frostbite turns slows into freezes, and Ice Lance deletes Frozen targets. Also owns the whole AoE kit: Frost Nova, Blizzard, Cone of Cold.

Fire - fine early

Fireball has 35 yards of range and good damage per mana. Many players quest Fire until 21-23 when the AoE tools come online, then swap to Frost without respec pain.

Arcane - for veterans

Arcane Blast and Missile Barrage make Arcane competitive in Forever - strong single-target and dungeon damage - but it demands tighter mana management and gear.

Key Frost talents

The talents the whole Frost game plan revolves around. Talents unlock at level 10; visit your class trainer every even level for new spell ranks.

TalentWhy it matters in Forever
Ice LanceInstant nuke on a short cooldown that hits Frozen targets for several times normal damage - your finisher all the way to 60.
Fingers of FrostChill effects can make your next spells count the target as Frozen - free Ice Lance crits without needing Frostbite to proc.
FrostbiteChills can freeze the target in place, setting up Ice Lance and keeping melee mobs off you.
ShatterHuge crit chance bonus against Frozen targets - the reason Frozen = dead.
Ice ShardsDoubles the crit damage bonus of your Frost spells - multiplies the Shatter setup.
Frost ChannelingCheaper Frost spells and less threat - more uptime, safer dungeon pulls.

Questing Frost vs AoE grinding

  1. 1
    Levels 1-9: wand and basics

No talents yet - keep Arcane Intellect and Frost Armor up, pull with Frostbolt or Fireball, and finish low-health mobs with your wand. Buy a Lesser Magic Wand around level 5; it's the single biggest early speed boost.

  2. 2
    Levels 10-20: single-target Frost

Frostbolt pulls mobs slowed, they crawl toward you and die before arriving. Arcane Explosion at 14 is your first AoE - use it when two or three mobs reach melee.

  3. 3
Level 20+: the AoE toolkit lands

Blizzard at 20 changes everything. Gather 4-8 mobs, Frost Nova them in place, Blizzard, Cone of Cold, and clean up. Questing stays the baseline XP - grind packs only at spots dense enough to be worth it.

  4. 4
Mana management is the real game

Your damage is fine; your mana bar is the limit. Conjure water constantly, drink after every pack, and pull at the speed your mana allows - not faster.

  5. 5
    Dungeon XP is weaker now

Dungeon mobs give far less experience than in Classic-era rules, so camping one dungeon from 40 to 52 doesn't work. Run dungeons once for quests and gear, then go back to open-world leveling.

FAQ

What is the best mage leveling spec in WoW Forever?

Frost, clearly - Ice Lance plus Fingers of Frost give it burst Classic never had, and the control toolkit means almost zero downtime to dying. Fire is a fine alternative for pure single-target questing.

Is AoE grinding still worth it?

Yes, but selectively. Dungeon-farming is dead, yet open-world packs of 4-8 mobs at dense camps still beat single pulls once you have Blizzard. Quest between camps instead of waiting on respawns.

Which professions while leveling?

Skinning pays for wand upgrades and spell ranks early. Tailoring makes your own bags and gear; Engineering is the classic pick for grenades that help AoE pulls and PvP.

What stats do I want on gear?

Intellect for mana, then spell power, then spirit to shorten drinking. Stamina keeps AoE mistakes from being fatal.

What about a leveling addon?

Pair the class plan with a route: Questie plus a guide addon tells you where to go next. See our WoW Forever addons rundown for the working picks.
