Verity Minecraft Mod
A yellow sphere delivered in a cardboard box that answers questions, learns your world, and slowly stops being friendly. The official adaptation of ThatMob's "Something" YouTube ARG — viral enough to pass five million downloads in a few months.
Two things trip up nearly every new player: the real mod is Verity JE by VarmiteYT (anything else is a reupload), and it will not work out of the box — Verity's dialogue runs on an LLM you have to configure before it can speak.
What the mod adds
Built with permission from ThatMob, the creator of the original video series.
Verity and his box
A yellow spherical helper that arrives packed in cardboard. Hit the box to let it out — it answers questions, gives tips and follows you around. For a while.
AI-powered dialogue
Verity's replies are generated by a large language model rather than a fixed script — ask about ores, your base, anything. Voice input and spoken replies are supported.
The Demon
A second entity that lurks in your world as things escalate. Verity seems to know more about it than it lets on.
Darker survival
Nights get genuinely black, and a flashlight becomes essential gear — the horror builds over in-game days rather than hitting all at once.
Install in four steps
- 1Pick a loader and version
Verity JE ships for Minecraft Java 1.20.1 (Forge) and 1.21.1 (NeoForge). Install the matching loader first.
- 2Download the jar
Get
verity-x.x.x.jarfrom the official CurseForge or Modrinth project page only. - 3Drop it in mods
Move the jar into your instance's
modsfolder and launch the game once. - 4Configure the AI provider
This is the step everyone misses — without it Verity spawns but stays silent. Details below.
The required AI setup
Verity's brain lives outside the mod. You point it at an LLM provider during first-run configuration.
| Option | What it means |
|---|---|
| Groq API | Cloud inference — fastest replies, needs a free API key. The most common choice in the official tutorial. |
| Ollama | Runs a local model on your machine — fully offline and private, but needs a PC that can handle both Minecraft and the model. |
| Other providers | The config accepts compatible endpoints; check the mod's setup tutorial for the current list. |
Java vs Bedrock
Searches for the Verity Minecraft mod return both editions — they are different projects.
| Verity JE (this page) | Bedrock addon | |
|---|---|---|
| Platform | Java Edition, PC | Bedrock — consoles, mobile, Windows Store |
| Status | Official adaptation, made with ThatMob's permission | Separate community addon inspired by the same series |
| AI dialogue | Yes — full LLM integration | Scripted behavior, no live AI |
Good to know
Skip the reupload sites
The mod's popularity spawned mirror pages offering repackaged jars. Only CurseForge and Modrinth carry the developer's files — reuploads are how modded malware spreads.
Multiplayer note
Everyone on a server should run the same Verity JE version, or behavior desyncs between clients.
Modpacks that bundle it
Packs like Horrorland and Something is knocking ship Verity preconfigured alongside atmosphere and performance mods — an easier starting point than manual setup.
It escalates slowly
The shift from helpful to hostile is the point of the design. Don't judge the mod by the first in-game day.
