Resident Evil Outbreak in the Browser
Capcom's 2003 PS2 co-op spin-off - never re-released on any modern platform - now runs free in a web browser. Both Outbreak and File #2 are playable through the Outbreakweb fan preservation project, with solo play and 4-player online co-op rooms intact.
Is it free? Yes. Do you download anything? No. Open outbreakweb.com, pick File 1 or File #2, and play - the PS2 games run through WebAssembly and WebGPU right in the tab. Solo works offline-style with AI partners; online co-op uses public or private rooms for up to four players.
How to start
- 1Use the right browser
Desktop Chrome or Edge with hardware acceleration (GPU performance) enabled - the games render through WebGPU and struggle without it. Some mobile browsers work but performance varies a lot.
- 2Pick a game
Outbreakweb hosts both Resident Evil Outbreak (five scenarios) and Outbreak File #2 (five more). File 1's "Outbreak" scenario is the classic starting point.
- 3Choose a survivor
Eight Raccoon City civilians, each with a distinct ability - Kevin the cop, Mark the security guard, Cindy the waitress, Alyssa the reporter, Yoko the student, George the doctor, David the plumber, Jim the subway worker.
- 4Solo or online
Solo runs with two AI companions. Online, create a public room or share a private room link with friends - up to four players, just like the original Network Adapter days.
What's included vs the PS2 original
| Feature | Browser version |
|---|---|
| Scenarios | All 5 per game - Outbreak, Below Freezing Point, The Hive, Hellfire, Decisions Decisions (File 1) plus File #2's five |
| Multiplayer | Public and private rooms, up to 4 players, peer-to-peer |
| Saves | Virtual memory card stored in browser storage - do not clear site data |
| Controls | Remappable keyboard + USB/Bluetooth gamepad support |
| Graphics | Resolution scaling - can look sharper than original hardware |
Outbreakweb is an unofficial preservation project with no Capcom affiliation - treat it as at-risk. Sites offering Outbreak "downloads" or APKs are not this project and should not be trusted. The game only runs on its own site - it cannot be played embedded elsewhere.
FAQ
Is the Resident Evil Outbreak browser game official?
No - Capcom has never re-released either Outbreak game. This is a fan project; Capcom has not publicly acted on it but there is no guarantee it stays up forever.
Can I play with friends?
Yes - create a private room and share the link, or join public rooms. Up to four players per session, each picking a different survivor.
Why is it laggy or not loading?
Two usual causes: hardware acceleration off (check your browser settings), or the servers being slammed at peak hours. A desktop with a dedicated GPU in Chrome or Edge is the reliable setup.
Which scenario should I play first?
File 1's "Outbreak" - the J's Bar zombie escape - is the tutorial-style opener. The Hive (Raccoon General Hospital) is the fan favorite once you know the controls.
