Short answer: no announcement exists as of October 22, 2026. The leaked October 8 date passed with nothing. The credible read: ports exist in some form — the evidence below is real, not fan fiction — but the release window slipped. Most watchers now point at Pokemon Day, February 27.

Confirmed vs hint vs leak

Headlines blur these layers. Here they are separated — "hint" means a real fact that allows more than one reading, "leak" means a third-party claim with no verifiable source.

LayerItemWhat it shows
ConfirmedNothingNeither Nintendo nor The Pokemon Company has announced Ruby or Sapphire for Switch
HintSloop emulator datamineThe GBA emulator inside the FireRed/LeafGreen Switch releases recognizes Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald ROMs by name, next to per-game fix routines
HintPoke Times HD clipAn official Japanese Pokemon account posted 30 seconds of suspiciously high-definition Ruby/Sapphire footage — matching the Switch record limit, from an account that "never posts emulated footage"
HintPokemon HOME labelPokemon traded in from the FireRed/LeafGreen ports display a generic "GBA games" tag rather than a game-specific one — consistent with more GBA ports coming

The evidence timeline

  1. 2/27
FireRed & LeafGreen hit the eShop

Pokemon's 30th anniversary opened with emulated Gen 1 ports on Switch — the model everyone now expects Hoenn to follow.

  2. 2/27
    Datamine: RSE ROMs already recognized

Programmer LuigiBlood found the ports' Sloop emulator carries detection entries for Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald — proof of preparation, not proof of release.

  3. 8/12
Shpeshal Nick claims ports are coming

The first credible leaker to put Hoenn Switch ports on the record.

  4. 9/22
Official account posts HD GBA footage

The 30-second Poke Times clip — Wingull and Peeko chasing Mr. Briney — looked rendered, not emulated, and reignited the whole rumor.

  5. 10/8
    The leaked date passes empty

Light88's October 8 prediction missed; searches for a Pokemon Ruby Switch port spiked anyway as the rumor went mainstream.

  6. 10/+
    Baker: not this month

Nick Baker reported the ports are no longer planned for October — and did not rule out a later launch on modern Nintendo hardware.

When a Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire Switch release actually fits

Pokemon Day — February 27

FireRed and LeafGreen launched on Pokemon Day this year. If Hoenn follows the same playbook, February 27, 2027 is the single most likely date — and it lands inside the 30th anniversary year.

A quiet shadow-drop

Emulated ports need almost no marketing runway. A random Tuesday eShop listing is genuinely possible — which is why the rumor refuses to die.

What delays it

Nintendo's own calendar is crowded, and a port that sells on nostalgia gains nothing from competing with tentpole releases. Slipping into early 2027 costs little.

What the ports probably are

Everything observed so far points to the FireRed/LeafGreen treatment — not a Let's Go-style remake.

Emulated GBA originals

Expect the 2003 games running on Sloop with the same wrapper: suspend points, handheld filters, and per-game fixes — not rebuilt graphics.

Emerald is in the datamine too

The emulator recognized all three Hoenn ROMs. A Ruby/Sapphire double pack plus Emerald — or all three bundled — both fit the evidence.

HOME connectivity

FireRed/LeafGreen already trade forward into Pokemon HOME, so Hoenn catches would almost certainly transfer into modern games the same way.

Switch 2 too

Leakers framed the window as "modern Nintendo platforms" — the ports would land on Switch and Switch 2 alike.

How to play the Hoenn games today

RouteReality check
Wait for the portsAll signs say they're coming eventually — if you want the official route on Switch, this is it
FireRed/LeafGreen on SwitchLive now on the eShop — same emulator, Kanto instead of Hoenn, HOME-compatible
NSO + Expansion Pack GBAThe GBA Classics library does not include Ruby, Sapphire or Emerald
Original hardwareGBA carts still work on any Game Boy Advance or DS Lite — used copies are the only fully official way to play Hoenn right now
Bottom line: treat the Pokemon Ruby Switch and Pokemon Sapphire Switch ports as highly likely rather than confirmed. The datamine and official footage are real; every dated leak so far has missed. February is the window to watch.
