What it is: PokeMMO turns the classic GBA/NDS Pokemon games into an MMO. You play through the original storylines in shared regions alongside thousands of other players — with trading, PvP, a global marketplace and events that the originals never had.

How to start playing

    Register a free account

    Sign up at pokemmo.com — email and password, no payment needed. The same account works on every platform.

    Download the client for your platform

    Native builds for Windows and Linux, an official APK for Android 5.0+, and an iOS build that needs sideloading with Developer Mode. Extract it anywhere and run the executable — no Java runtime required anymore.

    Import your ROMs

    PokeMMO ships with no game data — it asks you to point it at your own dumped ROMs on first launch. The minimum to start is a FireRed ROM plus a Black or White ROM.

    Pick a region and play

    Each ROM you add unlocks that region as a starting point. All five regions share one character and one economy — switch freely once unlocked.

Which ROMs unlock which regions

The one requirement that trips everyone up: you must supply your own ROM files. The game refuses to start without at least the base set.

Why the ROM requirement exists: PokeMMO is a fan project that stays alive by distributing zero copyrighted game data — you bring the assets, it brings the engine and the MMO layer. Only install the client from pokemmo.com; third-party "pre-loaded" downloads are a malware vector.

What's happening right now

Black 2 / White 2 expansion

Announced in August 2026 as the next major expansion. A public test weekend ran September 19–20 focused on storyline balancing — progress on the test server was wiped, so nothing carried over. No release date yet.

Halloween season

PokeMMO runs big seasonal events — Halloween is one of the year's biggest, with event-exclusive and costumed Pokemon that hold real value on the player market. Expect the event to land around late October.

Player economy

The GTL marketplace and trading are core to the game — event and shiny Pokemon are the high-value listings, and money-making routes are a whole meta of their own.

Play anywhere

Official Android and iOS clients share the same world as PC — one account, same character, cross-platform.

Is PokeMMO free?

Yes — the client and account are free, with no subscription. Optional cosmetic purchases support the project.

Do I really need ROMs?

Yes. The client contains no game assets, so it asks for your own dumped ROM files on first launch. There's no legitimate way around it.

Can I play on my phone?

Yes — there's an official Android APK (5.0+) and an iOS build that requires sideloading with Developer Mode enabled. Both connect to the same world as PC.

Is my progress shared between regions?
