What's in the box

Trail Cards

Including the Start (Independence, MO) and Finish (Willamette Valley, OR) cards, plus Forts, Towns and Rivers.

Calamity Cards

Dysentery, snakebites, broken axles - drawn when a Trail Card says "Press Spacebar to Continue".

Supply Cards

Food, medicine and parts you spend to survive calamities and rivers.

Also included

One pixelated die, a laminated roster and a wipe-off pen for the wagon party list.

Setup

  1. 1
    Write the wagon party

Put every player's name on the laminated roster with the wipe-off pen - real names optional, answers mandatory.

  2. 2
    Lay Start and Finish

Place Independence, MO and Willamette Valley, OR on the table about 3 feet apart - the trail will be built between them.

  3. 3
    Deal 5 Trail Cards each

Face down; players look at their own. The rest form a draw pile next to the Calamity deck.

  4. 4
Deal Supply Cards by player count

6 players: 3 each · 5 players: 4 each · 2-4 players: 5 each. Look at yours, keep them face down.

  5. 5
    Open the Supply Shop

The youngest player is Shopkeeper - sort the remaining Supply Cards by type face up. First player to die takes over the job.

On your turn

The player born closest to the real Willamette Valley goes first, then play passes left. Each turn you do exactly one of two things:

  1. A
    Play a Trail Card

Connect it to either end of the trail - rotate it either way. If you hold a card that connects (including Forts and Towns), you must play it unless you play a Supply Card instead.

  2. B
    Play a Supply Card

Only useful if a Calamity is in play on you - spending supplies is how you survive one.

Trail card typeWhat happens
Press SpacebarImmediately draw a Calamity Card and follow its instructions
RiverRoll the die per the card - one player must ford before any new Trail Cards can be played; fail and play passes left
Town / FortPlayable off any trail card - draw extra Supply Cards or remove a Calamity in play
FinishConnecting to Willamette Valley ends the game - if one living member reaches it, everyone wins

Dying and winning

Calamities kill. If a Calamity's instruction says you die and you can't pay the Supply cost, write yourself onto the roster's R.I.P. side - dead players still win if a teammate finishes the trail. If the wagon breaks down or the oxen die and no one can pay the fix, nobody moves and everybody loses.

The mean strategy is legal. Supply Cards are personal and hidden - hoarding medicine while the party lead bleeds out is harsh but within the rules. One survivor is all it takes.

FAQ

Is everyone on one team?

Yes - it's cooperative. The party wins together if a single member reaches Oregon alive.

What if we run out of Trail Cards?

If a player has no connecting Trail Card and doesn't want to play a Supply Card, they draw a Trail Card instead - the official rules give that as a third option when stuck.

Is there a newer edition?

Yes - a new version (Oregon Trail: Ultimate Trek by Goliath, late 2026) uses a different trail-board system with wagon movers and supply-matched spaces. These instructions are for the original Pressman card game.
